Apparently it's #CTDappreciationDay, so here is a photo I took of my @dmidk.bsky.social colleagues and our collaborators in #Greenland, waiting for the winch to pull our CTD up through the #SeaIce (Somehow, I always expect a halibut to be entangled in it but there never is...)

A CTD measures conductivity, temperature and density of ocean water. This is a small lightweight one that has been deployed for many years in this fjord.

One of the few places (fortunately) on the planet you can find polystyrene cups these days is #oceanography store-rooms. We send them down with our CTD* instrument packages to the depths where they get nicely pressurized and come back as very pretty thimbles. Its a great activity to combine with school talks but school is out of session so we have to step in as kids with colouring pens - not hard 😃 - *and timely as its less than a week until #CTDAppreciationDay

We go out to the North Sea once a year with the students of our mater in oceanography, for a fieldwork day. Pretty much all the activities revolve around this beauty 🤩.
