Saw #TheSubstance & it’s a great #cronenbergian body horror but some odd choices, notably it’s placement in a Universe where social media doesn’t exist… it’s maybe 30 mins too long but the repetition feels deliberately exasperating (like the last 20 mins of #AClockworkOrange ?)… I don’t buy the ‘male gaze’ criticism I’ve seen in some reviews - yes, #margaretqualley ‘s beauty & youth is ceaselessly objectified but it seems odd to deny women the agency to desire in a film directed by a woman…

Body horror, but, thankfully, without the terror - if that makes sense. And, sadly, no scorching hot Debby Harry to help distract me.
I don't know if being warned about this ahead of time would've helped prepare me or have made the whole experience even stranger.
P.S. Lest I unintentionally frighten anyone with that analogy - despite the weirdness the procedure went well. I have an excellent surgeon who made sure I was as comfortable as possible, was very attentive about providing additional anesthetic when I needed it, and was patient with my #ExecutiveDysfunction when she asked me for a music request and my mind promptly went blank.
Very glad that my mental librarian eventually decided to cooperate, because having music to focus on was very helpful.
