How to Create Your Own Tablecloth

    Creating things yourself

Instead of going out and buying everything why not just make them yourself. Today I am going to show you how to create your own tablecloth. No it does not have to be perfect, if you don’t try your will never know what you can do. So lets give it a go!

    Things you will need

    • Plain white material or in my case I used a piece of calico (cut to the size you prefer)
    • Sewing embroidery thread
    • Sewin needles
    • Scissors
    • A transfer or copy of picture of your choice

    Lets get started

The above is just an example of something to copy to embroider

For my tablecloth I cut out a meter square of calico material, then I got a picture and traced over it onto my material. There are a couple of ways to do this. I used a lead pencil and got a small box and put a torch inside it and covereed it with a piece of glass or perspex. This will act as a light box.Thi

Then I placed my picture on the glass and then the material on top and traced the picture with a lead pencil. A word of caution. It may pay you to secure the material and pattern so it wont move with some masking tape, so you don’t have it moving all over the place.

I Put my picture in all four corners of the cloth. You could also put a section of the picture in the centre, the choice is entirely up to you.

    Now for the fun part

The above pic is one corner of the one that I am still finishing off

I am embroidering mine. If you would prefer you could use texters, or even crayons. I prefer to use embroidery.

Whichever you choose I am sure it will turn out lovely outlining or filling in all the beautiful details to showcase your good work.

    Edging on your cloth

Once you have done that you will want to finish the edging off. A simple way is you can turn the edges down then sew lace all the way around and you are finished. This will look great, remember to choose colours that will enhance your table cloth.

    Second choice edging

This above pic will give you an idea of how to buttonhole around, turning the rough edges under

I will not pretend that this is easy it is not. I did a buttonhole stitch all the way around mine and then I used that edging to crochet my own lace edging. Which ever way you choose I am sure it will turn out great.

Have fun, I hope you will give this a try no matter which way you do it. And if you are not keen enough to make a tablecloth why not just make a small table runner or even a doily to get some practice first.

I would love to hear what your thoughts are on creating something like this yourself. This is something that you will have created with your own hands and no one else will have one like it
