  1. As someone that regularly tests the Cosmic desktop, I have to agree, it's still just beta software and shouldn't be advertised as stable, even though the 1.0 version has been released.

I do like Cosmic, it has great potential, but misleading users just hurts the reputation of Cosmic, and

  2. I almost decided to upgrade my 22.04 to #PopOS 24.04...was so close to clicking the button...
But then I learned the #cosmicDe
    does not support drawing tablets...
Which is essentially the only thing I use my laptop for nowadays. Oops.
I hope it gets implemented soon, it is kind of a deal breaker, and I don't feel like having to reinstall and rice gnome as the first thing after an upgrade

  8. Unstable Stream Update: 17th of January, 2026

This week, we waited a little longer to do this Unstable Stream Update because COSMIC DE 1.0.2 and KDE Plasma 6.5.5 came out alongside Linux 6.18.5, which were all duly landed.

In addition, Reilly Brogan also did a bunch of upgrades (with some feature enablement on top) all across our recipes repository. So now gvfs and vlc will let you use NFS shares as well.

For JS developers, NodeJS 24 was landed and is now the default in the repository.

For gamers, installing Steam now causes the ntsync module to get loaded automatically. And speaking of gamers, we also had a new contributor join who has access to NVIDIA cards and may potentially be able to help us set those up correctly for use with dGPUs.

Meanwhile, joebonrichie added support for debuginfod, which enables automagical downloading of relevant dbginfo files when firing up gdb or lldb to investigate issues. This yields a much more streamlined Developer Experience than before, where each relevant dbginfo file needed to be installed manually.

On the documentation side, NomadicCore landed new guidance for packagers in relation to how we believe high quality Pull Requests should look (aerynos.dev/packaging/workflow).

    #Cosmic #Linux #tablet with #stylus support when? 🙃

Detachable keyboard with stylus then #creative #techies can #netbook or draw or #OBD2 scan and #Tunerstudio using this as our grab-n-go, goto device. 4K cameras front and back for usable #video content would be great too.

It's a terrible market segment, I get it. One can dream though! And since you guys make fabulous hardware already... small hw #MVP prototype just "to see" if there's potential? 😀

  12. CW: Big Dumb UX Rant About Menu Bars

I really don't understand people that are ride or die for menu bars. They're not intuitive and it's hard to know what's under what menu. If it wasn't for people being used to them as a convention, the headers don't make any sense to me. File > Quit? Does that really make intuitive sense to people? :meowdizzy: It's also really hard to drill down properly because every menu item gets top billing, unless you have nested menus which are just a pain in the ass to navigate without accidentally clicking off or hovering over the wrong thing.

To me, macOS's worst aspect is the fact that they built the menu bar into their shell. Is the feature that's crucial to the function of an application in the toolbar of the window you're in? Nope! It's not in the window at all! It's up at the top of the screen for some reason, and who knows what heading it's under. :blobfoxtableflip: Apple really needs to merge their operating system offerings into one OS and offer either a desktop mode or a touch mode, but they can't do that because all of their stupid desktop applications rely on a stupid menu bar that's stupid. :meowpout:

Also, Cosmic's decision to go with menu bars merged with header bars is really off-putting to me. It feels like the worst of both worlds. :neofox_thonk: At least to me, it makes the interface design language look really inconsistent and confused.

Does any of this actually matter? No. :meowuwu: Does it drive me a little insane and make me feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people vehemently defend them as being a good user interface? YES. :blobfoxtableflip:

  13. #COSMIC Web Apps now supports most mainstream browsers even some firefox's forks like Waterfox or Librewolf or KDE's Falkon browser.

Unfortunately there is too much hassle to add Epiphany support so maybe in the future. It's a pain to work with it.
