Unstable Stream Update: 5 July 26
A really big update this time round. We have finally landed the next phase of our Versioned Repositories, big systemd changes, Linux 7.1 Plasma 6.7, Gnome 50.3 and Cosmic 1.2 plus a hell of a lot more.
There is too much to cover in a toot, so to check out all the details, you can read the announcement on GitHub:

Mini status update: 1st July 2026
We have spoken about our Versioned Repositories, phase 2 goal for months now and due to the awesome work of Tarkah and ermo, this was landed a little over a week ago to our volatile stream. Further infrastructure upgrades are in the pipeline and we will expand on it all in a future blog post.
We have landed new kernels (7.1 series), new DE versions (Plasma 6.7, Cosmic 1.2 and Gnome 50.3) amongst a load of other updates. In addition to that, Reilly has done a fairly extensive rework of our systemd package and how it works.
We need to let all these changes simmer for a few more days along with a little more testing of the Versioned Repositories, phase 2 code upgrades, before we sync our volatile stream contents to our unstable stream.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Arcanum icon theme has been updated to version 2.0. Cosmic DE is now supported!
It's available on codeberg:

If @system76 ‘s #cosmicde can be themed, why am I not finding a #BlueCurve theme for it? What is wrong with the world?!

As someone that regularly tests the Cosmic desktop, I have to agree, it's still just beta software and shouldn't be advertised as stable, even though the 1.0 version has been released.
I do like Cosmic, it has great potential, but misleading users just hurts the reputation of Cosmic, #popos and #system76

I almost decided to upgrade my 22.04 to #PopOS 24.04...was so close to clicking the button...
But then I learned the #cosmicDe
does not support drawing tablets...
Which is essentially the only thing I use my laptop for nowadays. Oops.
I hope it gets implemented soon, it is kind of a deal breaker, and I don't feel like having to reinstall and rice gnome as the first thing after an upgrade -
I just noticed that #CosmicDE screenshots now save to a screenshots directory in the pictures directory rather than just in pictures.
A small but good change. I like it as it keeps the directory clean.

Cosmic DE 1.0.5 has landed in the AerynOS volatile repository.
https://github.com/AerynOS/recipes/pull/1373
After a period of testing, it will land in our unstable repository, likely some point in the next week.

Unstable Stream Update: 17th of January, 2026
This week, we waited a little longer to do this Unstable Stream Update because COSMIC DE 1.0.2 and KDE Plasma 6.5.5 came out alongside Linux 6.18.5, which were all duly landed.
In addition, Reilly Brogan also did a bunch of upgrades (with some feature enablement on top) all across our recipes repository. So now gvfs and vlc will let you use NFS shares as well.
For JS developers, NodeJS 24 was landed and is now the default in the repository.
For gamers, installing Steam now causes the ntsync module to get loaded automatically. And speaking of gamers, we also had a new contributor join who has access to NVIDIA cards and may potentially be able to help us set those up correctly for use with dGPUs.
Meanwhile, joebonrichie added support for debuginfod, which enables automagical downloading of relevant dbginfo files when firing up gdb or lldb to investigate issues. This yields a much more streamlined Developer Experience than before, where each relevant dbginfo file needed to be installed manually.
On the documentation side, NomadicCore landed new guidance for packagers in relation to how we believe high quality Pull Requests should look (https://aerynos.dev/packaging/workflow/updating-an-existing-recipe/).

Cosmic epoch-1.0.2 has landed in the AerynOS volatile repo for testing and so far seems to be working nicely.
Great work by the @system76 team!

@system76 was able to do what Canonical tried and didn't make it: create a brand new desktop.
If I were people in @ubuntu I would seriously think about adopting #CosmicDE and join forces with them.
They would get rid of the RedHat influence on Gnome and innovate much more on the desktop space, which they haven't put much effort in the last few years.
