"One concept that creates misunderstanding is “scientific consensus.” It’s time to stop using this shorthand and make clear what it really means."
It's confusing because encountered in as different applications we see, "consensus" is a hazardously ambigous term. A poor choice for conveying what we intend to say in this context.
English is rich. There's an exact term for communicating this type of agreement: "consilience."

Normally wouldn't link any tweet but Annals of Botany really did a nice thread on our last #oaks paper (https://doi.org/10.1093/aob/mcad032). Pure applied #consilience in science: NGS SNP #phylogeny, FBD dating using a score of #fossils, and chipping in some (cleaned) #GBIF distribution data for #biome and #climate zone mapping.

To be clear, there is no new model being postulated here, these are just a few empirical facts about the many problems for which we have only complicated toy models for, applicable only in highly simplified, controlled contexts. A pre-Copernican redux of layered #epicycles.
The division of #physics into incommensurable branches is arguably necessary in the early stages of #theory building competition, but after many decades, it's time to take off the training wheels, and expect some #consilience & refinement.

It's also important that we make efforts toward beneficial #consilience when we analyze our #systems.At one extreme, we see how severe controls like #monopoly & #patents lead to #externalities like #inequality & #RegulatoryCapture (where they manipulate laws intended to counter these).
At the other end, in more #decentralized industries like Fashion, where clothes are too common to issue patents on, we see unchecked #competition often produces a lack of #coordination and #MarketFailure in the form of senseless overproduction going straight to landfills.
Neither are #sustainable. Both forms can be changed when #workers remember they have the majority, and can unite as #consumers to leverage their spending, as well as #collective #SocialMedia presence to affect change.
