Visited #spikeisland in #cork harbor yesterday with some friends and family. I was struck by the scale of the fort, the beautiful views of the surrounding area, and touched by the stories of many of the prisoners who were wrongly imprisoned there over the years.

Cobh Lights Up for St. Patrick’s Night

Cobh put on a cracker of a display tonight with fireworks over the harbour. We headed across to the Haulbowline Island Recreational Park to photograph the show and we weren’t disappointed.

However, the barge launching the fireworks drifted further along the water than anyone expected, which meant a scramble to reframe shots and swing tripods mid-display. I’d love to know how it looked from the Cobh side. Usually the barge loops back and forth in a fairly tight arc, but this time it had other ideas and kept wandering off down the harbour!

On a warm August day in 2005, you’d find plenty of lads fishing in Cobh, including this bunch who were brave enough to fish from a crumbling pier.

Another photo from that evening shows a disturbance in the water at the mouth of Cobh harbour, where I presume sprat are desperately trying to get away from mackerel and other fish. I wonder if that still happens?

Took advantage of the mild weather this weekend and went on two rides on Sat/Sunday, total of 104 miles. On Sunday I was planning to use the ferry cross to #Cobh but it was out of service. I rode with the #Ballincolig club and we stopped for coffee at a #charity event raising money for Autism Ireland / #TourdeMunster.

Visited the #Titanic museum in #Cobh this morning. The sky was overcast, but there were some rays of sun peeking through the clouds towards the end of our visit.

The museum itself was small, but had a nice tour guide and multimedia supplements. Not many real artifacts though. My family and I agreed that the Titanic museum we visited in #Branson #Missouri (of all places) was much better. We're looking forward to visiting the museum in #Belfast as well, since we hear that one is great.

Qween rocked Cobh on Sunday night, the last night of the Cobh People’s Regatta 2023. They’re an outstanding Queen tribute band, and they played all the hits, and soon had everyone singing along, dancing and cheering to the music. A short break in the middle of the set was required for the fireworks at 10pm, but the music started up shortly afterwards to the delight of everyone around.
