🌱 Es ist Freitag. Klimafreitag. Und heute geht es um deinen Klima-Handabdruck.
Wieso Handabdruck?
💪 Also: Unbedingt lesen! Und ran an den Handabdruck!
Los geht‘s!

Yesterday, @Nathanpboston, members of Beyond Methane RVA, and I were panelists on Electrify Now talking about gas leaks throughout the natural gas value chain, energy justice, gas utilities financial woes, and Richmond's newly created Public Utilities Commission. Check it out!

envision a duo lingo style app that gamifies personal climate action, assigning points to political, transportation, household, and other climate actions; reminds users to take small actions daily or weekly to earn points (ie call a rep or change out a car trip with other modes); and educates users about climate action and climate change in an empowering and creative way… why doesn’t this exist already? Why are so many people overwhelmed instead of empowered?

“The Senate on Wednesday passed a Republican-led effort to undo a Biden administration rule that aims to cut pollution from heavy-duty trucks.
The vote was 50-49. Sen Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) voted with Republicans to get rid of the rule. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who has been absent from the Senate amid health issues, did not vote.”

how’s your climate thinking going? here’s mine:
- no more than one airplane trip a year (big for Alaskans)
- just don’t use the car
- join local bike/ped/multimodal planning pushes
- vocally decry fossil fuel and its politicians
- amplify stories about my local renewable public utility
- make bike art (fight with joy and beauty)
- celebrate #ClimateFriday every week: change is good 🎊🎏🎊 -

woke: fossil fuel company execs indicted for paying hush money to generations of politicians and media conglomerates

Stefan Rahmstorf said models presented in major UN climate reports had a “longstanding and major shortcoming” because they didn’t capture how meltwater influenced the deep ocean.
-
“Once that overturning circulation slows down, we can only get it back again by no longer releasing meltwater around Antarctica, which means we need a cooler climate and then have to wait for it to restart.
“The longer we go on with higher rates of greenhouse gas emissions, the more changes we commit ourselves to.”
-
“a slowing or collapse of the overturning circulation would change our climate and marine environment in profound and potentially irreversible ways.”
Torrents of Antarctic meltwater are slowing the currents that drive our vital ocean 'overturning' – and threaten its collapse https://theconversation.com/torrents-of-antarctic-meltwater-are-slowing-the-currents-that-drive-our-vital-ocean-overturning-and-threaten-its-collapse-202108

happy #ClimateFriday 🥳
what’s new in climate research this week? how are you feeling about climate today? what do you think are the most important actions we should be taking as people and as societies?
-
PS can we make #ClimateFriday a thing on here? Isn’t this moment also demanding that we use the fediverse for international dialogue on #ClimateAction?
-
a core reason global climate plans have been so ineffective is that they haven’t been bold in accounting for economic relationships between countries. for example, Germany is now trying to delay giving up combustion engines by 2035 because… China, and so on.
we need a bold climate economy pact between nations, one that aids countries who need help making it real, and bans imports from ones that won’t invest in transition.

“We know what to do, and we have the solutions we need to do it, so the biggest problems are political.
They’re banks, politicians, financiers and the fossil fuel industry itself. We don’t need any magic technology to defeat them, just massive civil society willpower set in motion.”

Border walls hurt the weakest and least to blame in the climate crisis. Fortified borders don’t stop migration – they just make inequality worse, just like climate change. #ClimateFriday #ClimateChange Borders #geography #climate

So, over on defunct bird app we do a thing called #ClimateFriday where we post #ClimateChange stories - impacts, adaptation, news, science, etc. Lets get it rolling here folks!
I’ll start: if you haven’t already, check out the Drilled podcast for excellent investigative reporting on how we got to this place with climate misinformation. https://www.drilledpodcast.com/drilled-podcast/
