In 1858 a young woman broke a champagne bottle against the new timber bridge at Clarendon. The ford it replaced had tested every cart and carrier on the road south for twenty years. Sixty years later the timber was rotting — the ford pressed into service one last time before a concrete arch took its place.

Thomas Shipway died in bed, July 1923, aged 84 — a day after riding 16 miles to Willunga to preach both Methodist services. He'd preached most Sundays for 59 years and shod horses in Clarendon for 60.
Arrived in the colony aged 9 in 1849, apprenticed to blacksmith John Buddle in 1854, then ran his own forge on Clarendon's Main Road from 1863 — working the anvil into his 80s.
