After one day, I’m pretty sure Keene (our flag cichlid) ate all the angelfish eggs. I am entirely unsurprised by this. Sorry, angelfish, Keene does not want any more neighbors. #aquarium #fishtodon #angelfish #cichlid

My daughter just now: “what are all these white bumps on this leaf?” (Pointing at the fish tank)
I go over and look at neat rows of mostly-transparent whitish ovals adorning a long green leaf.
“Oh. Oh wow. I think I know,” I realize.
After a little research: “Yep, they’re angelfish eggs.” And as I go over to look again, I see the koi angelfish… uh… fertilizing the eggs with… an appendage. That’s a new one for me to witness!
“Oh no, I’m sorry,” I literally say to the fish, embarrassed that I am intruding upon such an intimate moment.
Keene, the flag cichlid, is *not* impressed. The mother angelfish gets into a minor scuffle with him. He seems genuinely surprised that she is feinting back at his bullying.
This is gonna get interesting. I can’t get a plastic tank divider here until Saturday, and then if they were to hatch I would have *no* idea what to do with the fry!

The #rainbow #cichlids are growing on me for sure! Very active and busy.
I much prefer south american cichlids and the large variety they offer. I really don't understand why African cichlids are as popular as they are here. They offer good colors sure but nearly all come in the same physical shape and none of the personalities I've seen with SAs, well, except kribs. The #kribs are nice.

I actually got some good(-ish) aquarium pics tonight!
Descriptions are in the alt-text.

Got some new fish and rocks for our aquarium today: a few purple harlequins, some Amano shrimp, some nerite snails, and a clown pleco. In this photo you can see two of the harlequins in the back-left schooling with one of the neon tetras, but the rest of the new gang are hiding. This shot also gives a good example of how big Keene the flag cichlid is; this is a 39 gallon bow-front tank, and he is about 75 percent the size of my hand — maybe 4 or 5 inches long? (I’m awful at estimating sizes.)

Keane, my enormous flag cichlid, saying “you cannot see me, I am leaf”
He is of course easy to spot here, but in the general surroundings he has modulated his shade/color enough that he’s surprisingly hard to pick out at a glance.

Almost 90 days since my last post, and the Geophagus has grown quite a bit in that time!
Lots of new plants in the tank as well, I need to make a special aquatic plant post soon.

Curiosity promotes #biodiversityExploratory behavior is one of the fundamental personality traits of animals – and these traits influence their probability of survival, among other things. For example, curious individuals can inhabit different areas in their habitats compared to more cautious conspecifics. At the same time, however, they expose themselves to a greater risk of being discovered and eaten.

The final day of ‘23, a new orchid flower opened 🤗 The last three are waiting for ‘24, hope the year has more good things in store, peace and unity especially.
To send off the year, a bonus apistogramma and a pleco on leaf cleaning duty for a Red Tiger Lotus, started the tank almost 7mo ago!

Difference in body size (or sexual #dimorphism) between males and females is common across the #animal kingdom. One of the most extreme examples of sexual dimorphism is found in the #cichlid #fish species Lamprologous callipterus from Lake #Tanganyika in East Africa
