  1. December 25, 1914 - Just after midnight on Christmas morning, German troops at the front in World War I ceased firing their guns and artillery, and began to sing Christmas carols. At the first light of dawn, many of the German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across no man's land, calling out "Merry Christmas" in their enemies' native tongues.

At first the Allied soldiers suspected it to be a trick, but they soon climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the German soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings; the fighting didn’t resume in earnest for several days, and then only at the insistence of the generals.

  3. And today we're all brothers
    Tonight we're all friends
A moment of peace in a war that never ends
    Today we're all brothers
    We drink and unite
Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white

    A Christmas on the frontline
    We walk among our friends
    We don't think about tomorrow
    The battle will commence
    When we celebrated Christmas
    We thought about our friends
Those who never made it home
    When the battle had commenced

  4. CW: Narration by Peter Capaldi of a letter regarding the Christmas Truce of WW1

Such a powerful #narration by #PeterCapaldi of a letter by Captain #ReginaldJohnArmes describing the #ChristmasTruce during First #WorldWar, as part of #LettersLive: youtu.be/ZQgR1h2Rogg

I've heard of and read about that brief truce during #WW1 before, but never this first hand account of it. Most notably probably for me is the song by #Sabaton: youtu.be/HPdHkHslFIU

  5. At 10pm EST on Christmas Eve, Repairers of the Breach will host “No War: A Moral Call for A Christmas Truce.” The call is similar to the Christmas Truce that occurred spontaneously on the front lines of World War I in 1914.

"Se una tregua spontanea fu possibile nel 1914, oggi le autorità politiche e i Governi dei paesi europei potrebbero imporre una tregua di #Natale ai due contendenti come viatico per un cessate il fuoco permanente che apra la strada alla ricerca di una pace giusta e onorevole per tutte le parti in causa."

"On December 24, 1914, an unofficial Christmas Truce was enforced on the Western Front. An act of trust and harmony, British and German soldiers mingled and played games together in the midst of one of the most atrocious events of the 20th century – World War I."
