  1. Photos from a stroll over to Kenshoji, a temple dating back to 16th Century situated at the base of a mountain which hosted a fort and lookout post during the same period. I visited it just after the #fallcolors were at their peak.

    16世紀に遡る建立の寺、見性寺を散策した時の写真です。この山の麓には、同時代に砦と見張り台が置かれていました。ちょうど紅葉が見頃だった頃に訪れました。

The Showa emperor once stayed at this resort. Now this small garden is one of the only remaining constructions remaining from the original facility.

  5. Today I explored the original grounds of Hakuchoen, a hot springs resort. During its postwar heyday, the facility hosted elaborate lodgings. The Showa Emperor stayed there when he visited the area.

When I first came to the area, the facility was still open for day visitors and hosted a massive circular "mammoth bath" with three-storey ceilings, saunas, outdoor baths, a game center, meeting spaces, a cafeteria and several gardens.

  6. Despite the winds and rain, there are small oases where cherry blossoms are still blooming like this one at Aoso Shrine on the base of Jizaisan mountain #NaganoPrefecture #bloomscrolling #japan #ChikumaCity

  7. Stovetop roasted #coffee (roasted and brewed by yours truly) and “Seattle cookies” (homemade by the American proprietor of a local onsen ryokan) overlooking the hillside rice paddies at Obasute. #nagano #ChikumaCity #japan #CoffeeRoasting

  8. In Japan, there is a long tradition of preserving swallows' nests, even when they choose somewhat inconvenient locations. This custom is thought to bring good luck. This nest is at the entrance of a friend's pharmacy.
