This weekend I was determined to break the creative drought, so I revisted a piece of music that I made in 2022, taking away the limitation of only using one software synth.

If you're into music theory, it has a few 'moments' ;)

  14. Rachel’s – Systems/Layers (2003, US)

Our next spotlight is on number 269 on The List, submitted by HerbT.

If the labels “indie chamber”, “classical post-rock”, “post-classical” or “subversives with a cello” pique your interest, you’re going to love this one. This is the final album from Rachel’s, a collective/project from Louisville, Kentucky started in 1991 by guitarist Jason Noble (formerly of post-hardcore band Rodan with Tara Jane O’Neil, who we’ll meet in another spotlight), then joined by violist Christian Frederickson and pianist Rachel Grimes to form a core trio, with the rest of the line-up differing a bit for each release. Kyle Crabtree, Edward Grimes, Greg King, and Eve Miller also join the group for this album, as well as a number of guest performers (including singer-songwriter Shannon Wright on one track).

Systems/Layers was created as a collaboration with the NYC-based SITI (Saratoga International Theater Institute) Company. The music was composed by Rachel’s for a SITI theatre production of the same name, and the album includes material performed live with the SITI Company and students from Utah State University and Skidmore College between July 2001 and June 2003. The album was then released in October 2003, nearly a year before the premiere of the theatre piece in September 2004 at Utah State University, in which Rachel’s performed the music live, backed by the production’s ensemble musicians.

And hopefully that background doesn’t scare off any listeners who aren’t big on theatre, as, truly, this album does not come off as a soundtrack or disembodied piece of work that requires knowing its context. It’s an absolute masterpiece that easily stands on its own, to the extent that it’s regarded by some as a seminal record in the world of post-classical music. That said, it definitely doesn’t hurt to know the album’s theatrical context, as it perhaps can give some insight into the track titles, use of field recordings, and how it all came together. There isn’t much indication in the album liner notes or on the band’s Bandcamp what this album is about, and so, if you’ll indulge me, here are the notes for the production’s program, written by the director and choreographer, Barney O’Hanlon:

In July of 1996 our Company was invited to teach a two week summer theater intensive at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. At the end of the workshop the participants presented final compositions based on the plays of Anton Chekhov. One of the compositions ended with an amazing piece of music that took my breath away. It was a duet for piano and cello. I ran up to the director after the performance and asked, “What was that music? Who was playing? I need to know!” And he said, “Oh, that’s Rachel’s.”

I immediately went to Tower Records to find Rachel’s… Rachel’s, as it turns out, is hard to classify. One can think of them as an indie-rock-band/classical-chamber ensemble, or a crazy classical band with an edge, or a “plugged-in” chamber group. But I now think of them as well… Rachel’s – the band.

…SITI and Rachel’s finally met in person in Louisville, Kentucky. We hit it off instantly and decided to dive into the deep end and make something together. But how does a band and a theater company create a show? What is the language we use? How do we communicate? How do musicians and actors collaborate?

We began by improvising, the actors on the stage and the band watching, listening and responding musically from the front. Right away it became apparent that how we make work as a theater company and how they make music together as a band was totally similar. What emerged in the space between was something completely unexpected and remarkably beautiful.

But of course the big question was what the show would be about. We found common ground in the age of information and globalization in which we live. As technology and industry becomes an increasing fact of life, as the world gets ‘on-line’ and we become more disassociated from our environment and from each other, how do we maintain our humanity? This is the primary question we were seeking to answer in our collaboration.

Quarterstick Records released Systems/Layers on vinyl for the first time in 2016, and that version also includes the band’s final release on side D, their gorgeous 18-minute EP from 2005, Technology is Killing People. The Bandcamp link below doesn’t include it, so make sure you give that one a spin as well if you like what you hear.

  16. The GOP Attack on Women Is Funded by Corporate America

The most aggressive and virulent right-wing attacks on women today involve 🔹eliminating women's reproductive rights.

Again and again, we're seeing small, pious, tightly organized, male-dominated groups in our society insisting that they are the "chosen ones", the autocrats ordained to rule over all women on the deeply personal, intrinsically private matter of choosing (for many different and difficult reasons) whether or not to seek an abortion.

Ironically, these authoritarians are mostly self-proclaimed "small-government conservatives",
⚠️yet they demand that the government be given practically unlimited power to control the minds and intrude most intimately into the bodies of women.

American culture has progressed from "Father Knows Best" to the birth control pill, then to Roe v. Wade, on to the emergence of women as bosses and powerful congressional leaders and to the likelihood that females will soon rise all the way to the American presidency.

In the quick span of a half-century, women have organized and mobilized to achieve a more democratic social order that includes sexual freedom, rising economic independence, greater visibility in public life, and a heightened control of their own destiny.
⭐️The struggle is not, as the right-wing piously claims, about some precise time limit for abortions or "protecting" the health of pregnant women,
but about ➡️ reasserting power over uppity females.
If a woman can be barred from controlling her own uterus, then everything else she thinks she controls is in doubt.

Yet, in a recent Gallup poll, 👍80% of Americans said abortion should be legal in all or most cases, with less than a fifth supporting the anti faction.
    So, what gives?
It's not what gives -- but who.
There's a surprising funding source that surreptitiously supports the no-abortion zealots:
    💥corporate America.
🆘The involvement of these superrich entities has drawn practically zero media coverage, and you certainly won't see corporations up front at rallies or proudly listing their brand names as sponsors of anti-choice groups.

But who do you think financed and helped organize the hundreds of legislative, gubernatorial, congressional and judicial campaigns of current officeholders who're now pounding women with the harshest, most oppressive and goofiest laws against reproductive rights and equality?
🔥The #Koch network of corporate billionaires is one stealth backer.
Also, the long list of #corporate blue-chip funders,
the dark money conduit of the U.S. #Chamber #of #Commerce,
and other storehouses of corporate cash regularly disburse truckloads of Big Business dollars across the country to elect those extremist candidates.
Not that top corporate executives actually agree with the war on women.
But they also don't care if abortion is outlawed, 🔸because they're rich
♦️ and can quietly arrange any abortions their families choose.

Brand-name corporations willingly finance hordes of anti-choice candidates as part of an obscenely cynical political bargain in which "pro-life" morphs into "pro-corporate."
The greed-heads need boneheaded candidates who'll go to extremes
    ("Protect the holy sperm!")
to gin up their ideological base, get elected and then dutifully serve the corporate interests.
The same corporate giants also finance the 💥American Legislative Exchange Council ( #ALEC ), which has written and pushed many bills to take reproductive rights away from women.
    But another well-funded group,
💥Americans United for Life ( #AUL ), has become a primary legislative front group for the anti-choicers, hawking the most extreme program.
It's not only intent on criminalizing abortion, but it was also the instigator in 2011 of the national witch hunt trying to destroy Planned Parenthood.
👉Claiming to be a "charity," AUL shyly and slyly refuses to tell us where it gets its money.
Anti-abortion absolutists like AUL, along with yahooing legislators and Supreme Court justices who serve them, are exultant:
    🧨"We're winning everything!" they exclaim.
A two-legged ego like Florida Gov. Ron #DeSantis has even calculated that he can ride the women-bashing wave all the way to the White House in 2024.
But sometimes you lose when you "win," because you get to sipping your own bathwater and thinking it's Champagne.
As an old Texas saying puts it:
❇️"Don't piss off momma. If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."
And momma sure ain't happy about losing her reproductive rights.
In particular, it's the younger generation
-- women as well as men
-- who're newly focused on this abusive power elite.
As my longtime friend Cecile Richards, former president of #Planned #Parenthood, correctly called it:
"They have energized a whole new generation of young activists, and for that I'm grateful."
✅It's that movement that matters. It's fueled by the democratic populist spirit of ordinary but strong women who will not be put down

  18. Harris argues that, at long last, the ⭐️end of the Trump era⭐️ is in sight

Instead of treating Trump as an equal force in the system, the
❇️ Democrats are now treating him more like a virus.

It is hard to overstate the extent to which this is facilitated by the other way in which Trump’s enduring presence has reshaped American politics:
-- the big, sturdy #echo #chamber in which he and his supporters exist.

The right has been in a #bubble for some time, but Trump strengthened and refocused it.

Allies like Elon Musk helped; Musk turned his social media platform X into a literal economic engine for the fringe right rather than just an engine for attention.

The bubble grew more insular and isolated, making it easier to treat as exceptional instead of as integrated.

Harris was direct in articulating the threat many Americans see in Trump, including his #authoritarian tendencies.

“I will not cozy up to tyrants and dictators like #Kim #Jong #Un, who are rooting for Trump,” she said at one point, “who are rooting for Trump because they know he is easy to manipulate with flattery and favors.

They know Trump won’t hold autocrats accountable because he wants to be an #autocrat himself.”

  19. Dear Hollow’s Mathcore Madness [Things You Might Have Missed 2023]

    By Dear Hollow

Y’all ready to skronk? Cuz it’s ’bout to get skronky. I had a realization about midway this year that all I was doing was contributing mathcore releases to Kenstrocity‘s Stuck in the Filter pieces. So instead of painting myself as a one-trick pony who can only do math three times a month, I decided to reveal my cards as a mathcore sellout by the end of 2023. I have been given an incurably bad taste this year, and a spotlight under which I stand alone while commenters and colleagues alike chuck tomatoes and copies of Mercyful Fate’s Dead Again and Saxon’s Rock the Nations at me (saying, and I quote, “get some culture, you sellout”). See, when the inimitable Kronos left, he took with him the taste for the mathy skronk. I suppose Dolphin Whisperer has some math love built into him, but we’re too busy squabbling over details most of the time.1

Thus, I have compiled a list of some mathcore releases you might, uh, tolerate! Because I have filtered and expressed opinions over acts like See You Next Tuesday, Sleepsculptor, Soulkeeper, and Squid Pisser (I’m not sure why I picked all mathcore acts that start with S, but here we are) you can go find ’em yourself if you’re soooo upset why I didn’t include them. Without further ado, let’s get skronky (another S!).

Better Lovers // God Made Me an Animal – Look, I get it’s an EP, but when your band consists of the instrumental section of the defunct Every Time I Die, the guitarist of Fit for an Autopsy and End, and the vocalist of the legendary The Dillinger Escape Plan, we can make some exceptions. Charisma and sleaze drip through the southern-fried leads of these four songs, while Greg Puciato’s unmistakably charismatic vocals rip across, formidable cleans gracing melodic noodling with a catchiness that contrasts with the dense groove. Speaking of the groove, they hit at just the right moments, recalling I Am Hollywood-era He is Legend in “Sacrificial Participant,” while punk speed graces “30 Under 13” with a franticness, while the riff in the title track is absolutely mammoth. Quite the lineup, and while the sound is what you’d largely expect from its ranks, the five-piece makes its debut EP just damn good mathcore.

Chamber // A Love to Kill For – Nashville’s Chamber enters the fray with a sound that weaponizes mathcore for maximum punishment, a tad like Frontierer meeting late-era The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza in a knife-fight behind the old Kmart: down-tuned thuggishness, chunky and bruising rhythms, noodly riffs, and squealing leads.2 Vocalist Jacob Lilly offers a vicious performance, his roars and fry vocals dripping with vitriol, while the cutthroat axework collapses and crushes around him, and drummer Taylor Carpenter hits the kit balancing rock-solid anchoring and pure mania. A Love to Kill For is a relentless metalcore attack barbed with hardcore punk, mathcore, and hints of deathcore: carefully calculated, intensely brutish, and worth every concussion Chamber can muster.

Euclid C Finder // The Mirror, My Weapon, I Love You – A balanced affair unafraid of the noisemaking, Baltimore’s Euclid C Finder (presumably named after the Fallout weapon) releases a grind-tinged math attack of viciousness and oddity in equal measure. Nineteen minutes of wonky rhythms, blasting percussion, manic dissonance, panic chords aplenty, and insane vocals greet the ears with the subtlety of a five-car pileup. It would be easy to dismiss The Mirror… as just another Dillinger– or Converge– worshiper, but then the groove hits. The trio balances its treble trouble with a chunky hit of downtuned intensity and gruff barks that gives respite to the million-miles-per-hour of noodly technicality. It’s a toothy and intense affair that never takes itself too seriously (i.e. “Jonathan Davis 10000 BC”) and never overstays its welcome.

Telos // Delude – What makes Copenhagen’s Telos unique is its blackened and noisy take on mathcore. Or, if you please, a mathy take on blackened hardcore – whatever floats your boat. A bit like if Hexis (with whom they released a split this year) and Botch had a scary-looking baby. Misanthropy oozes from every orifice and hostile noise fills negative space, ominous leads and dissonant plucking wearing haunting grooves into the brain. Tracks like “Bastion,” “I’ve Been Gone for So Long,” and “As Atlas Stumbled” are full-on assaults of intense proportions, while the more subdued ritualism and atmosphere in “I Accept / I Receive” and “Throne” show the depths of Telos’ lurching and rumbling depravity. Fans of mathcore and blackened hardcore would do well to do a headlong dive into this particular abyss.

Thin // Dusk – Mathcore gone grind. Reveling in tight descending patterns of insanity, with a fearlessness of skull-caving death metal, New York City’s Thin will beat you senseless with every weapon in its arsenal. A wall of noisy noodling, panic chords, and squalid feedback is erected with every attack, collapsing for death metal-inspired weight and dissonant plucking throughout that feels like homage to this year’s Asystole. Screamo orientation fuels the fire and brevity is the name of the game, but toss in formidable performances from all forces involved, with howling screeches giving way to gravelly gurgles, groovy riffs giving way to frantic tremolo, and the rhythm section cutting through the darkness. As the cheery acoustic strums of closer “Mangrove” sound in final respite, Thin revels in its sonic and lyrical pairing of nostalgia and trauma – a dark night of the soul.

Dead Soma // Pathos – A more rhythmic and atmospherically spidery but nonetheless viciously punishing take on mathcore. Best described as Loathe covering Converge songs, the sepia-toned and mysterious Deftones influence is unmistakable, but Sweden’s Dead Soma is unafraid to embrace the intensity. Hinting upon djent not unlike countrymen Vildhjarta and weighty rhythms like Car Bomb, the grooves are palpable and punishing, guided by the dead hands of electronic glitches and pinch harmonics and dragged by manic barks and screeches. Chino Moreno-esque whispery cleans and subdued mumbles add to the glitching and warm synthwork in the more laid-back tracks, which add further dynamic to the relentlessly fat riffs and mathy noodling (see: “Life and Limb” to “Error Blemish”). Warmly atmospheric, it carries a vintage tone by the vocals and synth, but is ultimately uncompromising in its brutality.

MouthBreather // Self-Tape – This one is less mathcore by sound and more by name. The Boston collective’s debut LP I’m Sorry Mr. Salesman (another filter cleaning I contributed to) was Coalesce-meets-Converge-core through and through in a groovy take on mathcore, but after a come-to-metalcore-Jesus moment they go straight for the jugular with a nu-infested, groove-infected -core sound for Self-Tape. The viciousness is front and center, with aggression and fury spewing from every chug and growl, with its storied mathcore history offering its energetic bite. Now featuring more deathcore weight and nu-metal influence to slam into your sorry-ass ears alongside the ghosts of Christmas skronk, Self-Tape reflects a descent into madness through its very reasonable twenty-three minutes of film references. Maybe you’ll think it’s just metalcore with no mathcore in sight, and you’d be right, but (a) that’s why it’s at the end of this piece and (b) your head will be bobbing so hard you won’t care.
