  1. #Fosterville #GoldMine won't change methods despite sparking #earthquake.

Residents who live near the mine say frequent earthquakes rock their homes and have damaged properties before.

Kath and Wayne Bordieri have felt their home quiver and rock hundreds of times from underground blasting by a nearby mine outside of #Bendigo in #CentralVictoria. #auspol

  4. These pics were taken on a road trip to #Centralvictoria, specifically #Colbinabbin, late December last year.

These magic scenes are just one collection of many throughout our State (and beyond), which have been affectionately dubbed #siloart.

This collection I believe is known as ‘THE COLBINABBIN FARMERS' PICNIC’, which depicts the locals of the district coming together back in the day, for an annual chance to relax and unwind!

I marvelled at these for some time. And must admit, was taken back to a different time to those we experience today.

The quality was superb and scale of these things; epic.

  5. HELP!!!

    Anyone know what this is?

I wanted to say #GladiolusCommunis and exclaim ‘#HelloPossums!!’

But I had a sneaking suspicion it could be something totally different.

And so too does my ID app… in fact it suggests anything from #Lobelia, #Montbretia, #CannaLily - and yes of course… #Gladiolus!

Google image search wanted to tell me it’s a gladdy… but you know what.. I’m not so sure.

Whatever it is, ‘twas snapped on my sisters farm in #Centralvictoria a few weeks back… deep red and it is happy as Larry.

    Oh what the heck, I’ll just say it;
    #HelloPossums!!!!

    🤣🤣🤣

  6. A domestic #olivegrove consisting of a few hundred trees in #Centralvictoria #Australia… just after #dusk.

These will be ready to pick soon.

The trees will be subject to a machine that will ‘shake’ each of them one by one carefully (and with love!), so that the olives drop on a mat and scooped up into a hopper.

This machine is called a ‘shaker’, funny enough!

We’ve had many a year prior, with dozens of peeps from near and far coming to pick for a few hours over a weekend - and rewarded with a hearty spread, vino and cheer.

Loads of strangers turn up to participate.

Olives go off to a small processing plant nearby and come back as oil. Loads of rain last year which means a bumper crop this year.

This lot will yield between 1000 - 2000 litres this year I think…

    Pretty cool!

  7. Meet this critter, the #orbspider, scary looking, but she’s pretty harmless.

This is a female. They’re the big ones! Males are way-smaller in size.

I saw a heap of these (nearly walked into this one’s web) a week ago, along the #LoddonRiver in #Bendigo #australia.

    Australian golden orb weaver:

Found in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, northern New Zealand, and New Caledonia.

The female typically grows to around 40mm (1.5 inch), whereas males only reach around 7-10mm (quarter to a third of an inch) in length.

It’s web is normally over 1 metre in diameter. Once built, it never leaves its web.

They’re harmless and not poisonous to humans.

Its main predators are birds and parasitic wasps.

Breeds throughout late summer and autumn, and produces an average of 380 eggs.

The tiny males tie down the much larger females before mating, weaving silk threads over their abdomens.

Sexual cannibalism is relatively rare with this species, however up to 50% of males are cannibalised throughout the natural course of life (and whilst attempting to mate), as ‘prey’.

They’re an edible spider; considered a delicacy in New Guinea. They’re lightly roasted over an open fire. Ummm, no thanks 😳

  8. Dads garden has these lovely #geraniums flourishing in the summer heat… Both pink and red.

Brings back childhood memories, easy to grow but need cutting back after the flowering period so that they come back even more plentiful next year!

    #glorious! 🙏💖

  9. You’re looking at the #Australianbush from a 30 metre high viewing platform in #Bendigo #Australia - #OneTreeHill

For mine, the bush is somewhat of a paradox inasmuch, as whilst it appears harsh and dry, it also looks magnificently lush as well.

I feel this is my true home!

    I love this setting… around 35°, so that’s around high 90s Fahrenheit.

This is untainted nature at its best.

  10. Look at this gorgeous bush shrub… the #juniperwattle!

I checked my flora identification app, and it insisted that this beauty was a #prickly-leaved paperbark but I’m not so sure. If there are any wattle experts out there who can clarify, please feel free.

The bush was teeming with these in #Bendigo #Australia - #onetreehill to be precise.

Unknowingly, silly me was standing on a bull ants nest, and within seconds, I had a couple of dozen of the critters scurrying over my feet. I was wearing thongs. Flip-flops for non-Aussies 😜

And you can only but imagine my reaction. Anyways, it was well worth the couple of nips that I now wear with pride!! 🤣🤣🤣

The wattle fruit is magnificent and just goes to show dry, arid bush plants can shine just as magnificently as any urban flowering plant.

  11. In general this garden is classed as low maintenance. And for good reason!

Many hot, temperate rural properties / settings require hearty plants and shrubs to withstand the heat, soil conditions and lack of water; sometimes draught.

Not to mention long days cropping and tending to stock, maintaining the multi-thousand acre property etc. Time-poor farmers is the norm in any state or country!

Naturally, indigenous plants do well here in #Bendigo #Australia, however introduced species often (but not always!) need a little helping hand to survive and flourish.

All the same, this garden benefits from a full dam nearby this year, so it gets a good watering. The lawn is a dead giveaway!

    Enjoy a few random #farmgarden pics…

  12. The trusty flora identification app tells me this is #wildgrape.

I’d suggest on this occasion it is correct! It’s definitely a grape vine of some sort. And it’s growing a little wild!!

Looked for early signs of fruit. Or remnants of previous existance of grape. None to be found.

It was lovely on a hot day to walk under this old street verandah in #inglewood #victoria #Australia - I think this building, like many in the Main Street, was erected back in the late 1800’s.

Also couldn’t tell if the shop was still used today as a retail outlet. It had an old sign saying ‘antiques’… I’d suggest not. But as always, I’m happy to be corrected!

All the same, it appears this vine has been around for years and it’s resilience ensures it’s able to shine in all its glory along the shop frontage.

    Nature knows no bounds.

  13. #olives (Olea europaea) are natives of the #mediterranean parts of #asia and #africa and have been in cultivation for thousands of years.

There is archeological evidence that indicate olives were grown in #crete as early as 3500 BC and olives are some of the oldest living trees in #europe with a few believed to be well over 1,000 years old.

These 500 or so #olivetrees on the farm produce well over 1000 litres of oil, after being picked and pressed nearby.

It’s a young #olivegrove; about 25 years old but has produced a bumper crop during most of those years. Draught however, impacts yield from year to year.

Fruit will start to appear in the coming weeks and harvest will be late March, through to April. There’s usually a large window of opportunity to pick olives in #centralvictoria #Australia. D#And it’s all dependent on weather and the development of fully ripened #olives 🫒

Picking has always been a festive event with people from near and far coming to participate. Once all the hard work is done, food, drink and merriment normally follows!

  14. This #vibrant #Bougainvillea took my breath away.

Even in the searing heat of #Centralvictoria #Australia, it’s display in this country suburban street looked effortless!

It looks healthy and well hydrated. Almost as if it is in its perfect element.

The purple, contrasting with its lush green foliage (and yellow centres!) really brings this beauty to life!

  16. Various #roses enduring the heat in the evening, from yesterday.

The car’s outside temperature told me it was high 30’s (39C / 102F).

This week in #Centralvictoria #Australia it has been scorching hot.

Some of these roses from a suburban front yard looked a little worse for wear, but most were still putting on a show!

  17. On this warm day, I found more #oleander or sometimes known as #nerium.

It is a shrub or small tree that thrives in temperate and subtropical areas.

The tree (last pic) looks dry in the afternoon heat, but overall the flowers present as vibrant - and red - as ever!!

This is growing happpily in #Bendigo #Australia and is vibrant in an otherwise traditional #Australian #bush setting

The oranges and yellows are #beautiful and they stand out against the surrounding shades of browns and greens.

  19. The #fringedlavender or sometimes known as #Frenchlavender, is native to the Mediterranean, the Atlantic islands and the Arabian peninsula.

Growing to 60 cm (24 in) tall, it has gray-green, lance-shaped leaves and a lightly woolly texture.

The long-lasting, narrow spikes of purple flowers, topped with pale violet leaves, first appear in late spring. The whole plant is aromatic with the typical lavender fragrance. This one on the farm is at the end of its flowering cycle, however still has its dominant lavender scent.

The #butterflies love it too! 🦋

    It smells delicious!

  20. Touring afar to #Inglewood #victoria#Australia today.

We observed freshly cut and bailed straw, most likely for stock feed.

These circular #haybails are large; about 5 feet in diameter.

These days you’ll notice some of these throughout #Centralvictoria are covered in a biodegradable protective cover so they can remain in the paddock and exposed to the weather until collected, sold or used.

The bails pictured however, will probably be collected and stacked / stored under large sheds to protect them from the elements. If they were left out they’d spoil, attract mould and become unusable for feed in no time.

I’d guess these were harvested and bailed over the past fortnight.

Last pic (you’ll need to zoom in!) shows hundreds of these bails over say, a 100 acre paddock.

    There are so many!!

  21. #agapanthas growing on the farm are late blooming when compared to those I’ve taken in #melbourne of late, despite country weather here being approx 3-4 degrees warmer on average this time of year.

    🤔

Notice how these white flowers are just emerging, the purple one near one of the sheds is already fully out though.

I do love however, visualising the early tightly packed pre-bloom arrangement of the flowering bulb (pics 2 & 3).

It slowly opens and unfurls over a few days until each individual flower and petal reveals itself in all their glory!!

    #intriguing.

    It’s Lifespan is a mere 2-3 weeks 😳

The adult flies around feeding from nectars of selected flowers. And in doing so, pollinates plants along the way.

This #butterfly determines the smell of a flower with its feet. It identifies the flower through vision and odor.

Males get all the perks. They patrol all day around host plants and to mate with females.

  27. Closeup of a #ladybug at a swimming pool, my boys and I visited.

    Some call them #ladybeetle.

I didn’t realise there were over 6,000 species of these things 🐞 - most have round to elliptical, dome-shaped bodies with six short legs.

They’re often coloured yellow, orange, or red with small black spots on their wing covers, with black legs, heads and antennae.

#ladybugs are generally considered beneficial insects, because many prey on aphids or scale insects, which are agricultural pests.

Plus they’re gorgeous to watch … living their best lives!

  28. The #oleander (or #nerium), is a shrub or small tree grown worldwide in temperate and subtropical areas as an ornamental and landscaping plant.

Apparently it is so widely cultivated that no region of origin has been identified, though it is usually associated with the Mediterranean. No wonder these are thriving here in the dry heat of #Centralvictoria #Australia!!

  29. #myrtleleafmilkwort is an evergreen #southafrican shrub or small tree found along the southern and south-eastern coasts.

It can typically be found on dunes, rocky places, along forest outskirts, beside streams, and in open grassland.

The soil here on the farm is sandy, with rocky quartz and some areas have considerable eucalyptus oils infused within the soil, therefore it’s a challenging environment to grow some plant species.

They’re looking happy and healthy on the farm however, in #Centralvictoria #Australia, therefore the conditions must be agreeable to this #butterflybush (an additional name it is referred to).

  31. #gumtrees are a staple of most #Australian bush settings.

The #gum is my favourite tree of all time. To me it represents the epitome of the #AustralianBush which is hearty, resilient and beautiful; all rolled into one.

Just look at these elongated leaves (zoom in) and the thin trunks on this young group, located close to a rural dam.

With the soaring heats expected this week in #Centralvictoria, these aussie icons won’t flinch one bit. They’re tough as nails!

  32. Kniphofia uvaria is also known as tritomea, torch lily, or #redhotpoker … for obvious reasons.

It originates from the Cape Province of South Africa and has been introduced into many parts of the world (ie in non-native environments).

As such, it is now regarded as an environmental weed in these locations, spreading into natural areas, where it can grow in thick clumps and threaten sensitive ecosystems.

This one however, in #Bendigo #Australia appears to be ‘reigned in’ and well under control!

    #Striking

  33. More rain. Now 33 degrees, will stop shortly and heat up again, dry out and become super humid.

  35. This #Grevillea is living its best life on the farm.

It’s flowering prime is coming to an end, however there are a few still flowers displaying proudly - and one was host to a couple of visitor #bees as I took these shots!

Banks' grevillea (this one) is mostly found on the #queensland coast from #Ipswich to #Yeppoon, but sometimes further inland. It mostly grows in woodland and forest / bush areas.

The Noongar (#indigenous peoples in this district) name for the plant is #mindiyet.

This plant however is flowering prolifically in #Bendigo #victoria #Australia.

  37. Before: late September 2022

3 months ago (first 2 pics) - #Canolaoil crop is blooming with bright yellow flowers in #CentralVictoria #Australia.

After: ready for harvest, Christmas Day 2022 (3rd pic shows dried crop, 4th pic shows the pods and black #canolaseeds that are removed via the header / combine harvester.

Harvest involves removing the heads (pods) and extracting the small black seeds. The seeds are sold by the tonne.

    #landscape #victoria #centralvic #bendigo #rurallife #rural #farmlife #farm

  38. #Canola crops are ready for harvesting.

They start off as lush fields of bright yellow. Last visit to the farm the farmhouse was surrounded, as far as the eye could see with yellow. I’ll dig out and post those pics in a second.

Anyways, over half of Australia’s canola production will be exported to #Europe this year. It’s in demand abroad.

The canola seeds (small black round seeds removed from dry woody pods) are ground and the oil is extracted. The higher the oil content, the more the farmer receives per tonne of production. There’s a bit more to it than that, as quality of the product also factors into price.

The oil is used for a variety of products; like biodiesel and in food including: margarine, cooking oils etc.

My brother in law and his boys are harvesting #wheat up to 18 hours a day atm, even today on #christmas. Will start on canola after that.

Farm life is rewarding. But tough as well!

  39. #CentralVictoria #Australia has so much to offer visually and spiritually (for the soul).

We’re not too far from #Bendigo as the crow flies and these are some typical views you encounter once you’re off the bitumen and on a #dirttrack.

There’s so much character out here. And given the higher temperatures this week (40C / 100F), we’ll be looking out for snakes as they’ll be around and about sunning themselves in the grass and crops.
