Communique from the Mapuche Political Prisoners of the Grollmus Case
In the face of these outrageous convictions and a fraudulent trial, we declare the following:
Mari mari pu machi, pu lonko, pu werken, kom pu che.
Today we direct our words to the society in general, and to all those who have shown us support in this process known as the “Grollmus Case”.
As Mapuche comuneros, we have been condemned with convictions that will set a precedent for being obscenely political. We have been convicted for political reasons, for being Mapuche who live on and reclaim our territory.
Following the widespread media campaign, and through the spectacle staged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the PDF, the Grollmus family is suing the state seeking compensation and reparations.
The prosecution, with the support of the courts, achieved its goal: a conviction that when combined between the different prisoners, amounts to 1055 years in prison.
The press sensationalized the verdict, and political power backed it up with absolute clarity.
Our response is this: your occupation against our people and territory is barely 143 years old. Our people have resisted the Spanish empire for nearly 300 years.
Today, the arrogant republican Chilean State has sentenced us to more than 1000 years in prison. The only reason being our struggle for our sovereignty, for a good life, and for our dignity. This will receive the most necessary response: to continue the legacy of our people, struggle for our dignity and freedom.
The PDI’s task force and BIPE morbidly roam the prisons, searching for witnesses to turn into faceless “protected” informants.
The sentence and the verdict were handed down based solely on four accounts from these “witnesses.” Our territory is being militarized, and our natural resources are once again being plundered, mining concessions are returning, CMPC and Mininco, acting as sponsors, are handing out money to health clinics and schools.
We want to express our gratitude to the brothers and sisters in other territories and cities who have shown their support.
We will never renounce the struggle for an objective and due process.
We will mobilize for our freedom and for a fair trial.
Lastly, we invite everyone to join the mobilizations being planned in different territories on October 12, Indigenous Day of Resistance.
Annulment and freedom!
No more protected witnesses!
Unity in the Weychan!
Free All the Mapuche Political Prisoners!
