After spending half a day with CARP, iBGP, OSPFv3 and "pfsync" (pf state table synchronization), I now have seamless failover for my datacenter router working 🙂
Legacy-IP switches to a different provider assigned IP (I don't care!) while IPv6 stays exactly the same, without even dropping the SSH connection. 🥳
That was harder than I thought, but the result is absolutely amazing! My IPv6-network now survives when one node goes down, and IPv4 just switches over to anther egress NAT on another node.

Like I said, the carp in Dunker's Flow Ponds were up to stuff this morning. Here are a couple wrassling and rootling about near the inflow stream.

I enjoyed watching this koi feeding on the algae on the bottom of the large pond at the allotments this evening. Unfortunately, or fortunately (depending on the viewpt) they are under discussion of being moved. As can be seen in the vid the pond is in danger of silting up 😔 #koi #carp #kent #england

Searching the internet for #CARP, many sites recommend using a password length of 30 characters. #FreeBSD silently truncates it to 19. The Debian manpage of #ucarp claims to support 20 characters, but refuses to run given more than 19.
So why exactly 19 characters? 20 is the size of SHA-1 hashes and a comment in ip_carp.h suggests that CARP is supposed to use such a hash derived from a password. However, actual implementations treat it as a null-terminated string.
