Tonight our teenage daughter asked if we could rewatch the old Cane Toad documentary, An Unnatural History. We’d played it for her when she was much younger and it had stuck with her. It’s still a cracker documentary, in equal measures informative and alarming and hilarious. One of the best. Also, it ends with a theme song written and sung by Tim Finn of Split Enz and Crowded House fame.

Worth a watch if you’ve not seen it.

This film came up in conversation today and I'm always surprised that no one has seen it. I saw this in a biology class at uni and that is when I learned that documentaries can have a sense of humor.

#CaneToads When we lived in Far North Queensland my husband was an avid extinguisher of this pest. He would go out at night with an empty plastic baby wipe container, lid and plastic bag. He would collect them and put the full plastic bag in the freezer and leave them there... for a long time. Whenever I opened our freezer it was half full of cane toads

I don't know what the impact of many more feral cats would be in NYC. But if your warning is well-placed, the story would parallel one of my favorite #documentaries: the intentional misguided introduction of a species of toad to #Australia to eat sugar beetles. The toad population exploded, but it didn't eat the sugar beetles, in part because the toads were nocturnal and the beetles were diurnal.
