This is awesome: the light beam from cars with LED headlights aren't visible in our infrared aerial photos of Köln in the #CALEC project. (Mouse-over to make the gif go)

What a difference two hours makes! These photos of Cologne, Germany were taken just under two hours apart during a flight of the #CALEC project (funded by Stadt Köln).
Our only global view of Earth at night is taken around 1:30 am. How much light does it miss?

The center of Cologne, Germany, imaged in 5 different wavelength bands: ultraviolet, visible (red, green, and blue), and infrared.
The differences between the photos come about because of the different lighting technologies. Orange high pressure sodium has a strong infrared signal, while white LED is only in the visible band.
I'm not sure yet what the UV emissions are, but they're probably from metal halide lamps.
