Neat science: for 20 years, the UC Berkeley forestry folks have been running an experiment to see which of:
- thinning,
- controlled burns,
- both those,
- suppressing firesresults in the healthiest forest. Results: everything but suppressing fires is good, and thinning plus controlled burns be best. Thinning results in enough lumber to pay for the work.
