#ButtonDownEmail is privately owned but doesn't rely on VC money to grow itself and promote transphobia and has never been asked "hey do you condemn very obvious racism" and spent ten minutes failing to say "very obvious racism is bad actually".
But, you do you and what you need to do to keep afloat financially.

I reckon WordPress is good for some forms but #ButtonDownEmail more closely emulates things I would want to replace substack.
E.g. the paid subscriptions which writers need to live.

Yup. Was suspicious of substack for some time.
@annaleen identified it as promoting some authors on the sly over others.
It's using transphobia and other culture war bullshit to "drive engagement" and frankly thats not OK.
Alternatives like #ButtonDownEmail do exist. Check it out. Do due diligence. Ask @jmduke questions.

They've promoted writers on the sly and encouraged transphobia since forever. Being unable to say "no, we don't allow hate speech" was too much.
Currently #ButtonDownEmail looks like a good alternative. Do your own diligence! But it looks like a better fit in terms of not being bigoted. It is a concern that its a single person running it rather than decentralisation but that's the same with FOSS.
