  1. #OnThisDay—27 Jan in 1896—Public Baths, with a #TurkishBath department, were opened by #Burslem Corporation. 'Elegant Moorish doorways' separated the 2 hot rms, cooling & shampooing rms, Russian vapour bath—all wall tiled & with encaustic tiled floor—& plunge. A Turkish bath attendant was paid 27/- per wk, & a women's shampooer 5/- per day. A Turkish bath cost 1/-, or 6d. after 4.00 p.m.

  2. I fell down a rabbit hole. I love looking at old #maps but this one... wow

    1879, Port Vale House, the likely birthplace of #PVFC, on the Trent and Mersey Canal, Longport (near #Burslem, #StokeOnTrent city not formed yet) opposite Port Vale Street, with Port Vale Mills just down the canal.

    Port Hill, about half a mile away, remains today but the name #PortVale, apart from the street and the #football club, has all but disappeared
