  1. I have to write 26 beliefs for Wednesday's #BurningWheel game, I feel like I should not prep this much for a miniadventure
  2. #BundleOfHolding launched a new deal for #PaintedWastelands, a gonzo fantasy setting for old-school RPGs, but great for anyone who likes their fantasy more than a bit weird. bundleofholding.com/presents/P

They also have a number of other bundles still active that I'm not sure I mentioned, including #BurningWheel for another 12 days and both #OldGodsOfAppalachia for and #DIETheRPG for 5 more days.

  7. #TTRPG #CharacterCreationChallenge2026 #BurningWheel

You wouldn't think that a 20-year-old, highly lauded fantasy indie RPG would require something on the order of 7,000 words to simply go through character generation, and yet here we are. Thanks, Burning Wheel.

  8. Coring the Onion: OSR structuralism and non-OSR games

The RPG theory ship sails on unbidden, even as RPG networks of practice seem to be drifting apart. In November, there was a great post over on The Dododecahedron which bucked the trend and pulled theory work from outside of the author’s primary discipline, the OSR. Starting from a description written by Vincent Baker about the PbtA ‘conversation’, Dododecahedron author Rowan describes OSR play as an onion with four concentric layers: Character on the outside, then working inward to Mechanics, Procedures, and finally Adventure. Adventure is in the middle as the diegetic ‘fiction’ that the players are engaging with is the source of truth for OSR play. From there are Procedures, which describe the rules for how to go about play; that is to say, what travel looks like, or when random encounters occur, or how to track consumables. The next layer out is Mechanics, which describe the “rules” as most RPGs understand them; this is where initiative, ability checks, and all those specific bits live. Finally on the outside is Character, where elements like attributes, experience points, and skill ratings, all the things that make characters unique, sit. […]

  9. Reign is one of those systems that I was hoping might turn out to be the perfect RPG. Because that's what I'm looking for, and I'm sure it must exist, but none of the previous contenders weren't quite it. The previous contender was Burning Wheel, which I'd heard a lot of good stuff about, and the way Beliefs work is really great, and a big part of what I'm looking for. Only the rest of the system was extremely fiddly with excessive amounts of detail in some places (the enormous skill list) but fantastic bits in other places (lifepaths), but also some gaping holes (anything in between Fight and Bloody Versus).

Reign is next on my radar, and some stuff I read about it makes it sound it might be almost perfect. The dice system is unique and really interesting, but ultimately I fear it might be a bit gimmicky. You roll a dice pool of d10s, and all dice that come up with the same number form a set. You can roll multiple sets, and for each action you declared (which could be more than one), you pick one of your sets. The number of dice in the set is its width, the number on the dice is the height. Getting two different dimensions out of a single roll is a really cool idea. The problem is that the system tends to use these two dimensions for more than two things, which can have weird results.

For example, hits to your legs are easier to parry than hits to your head. I think that's the big one to me. Another one is that quick attacks that go first, also do more damage. I have less issue with that, but with 4 effects mapped to the two dimensions of the roll, I do wonder if two rolls wouldn't have made more sense.

Something I really love about it is that, unlike Burning Wheel, this system is intentionally a toolbox, meant to be tinkered with. Lots of optional rules and suggestions how to adapt it. These seem to be 5 chapters on combat; not sure if they're all the same system or alternatives, but clearly you can start easy and add detail as required.

  10. I'm curious if there are system out there fitting these loose criteria:

    * Fantasy or fantasy-adjacent
    * Setting neutral or setting agnostic
    * Important not based on the assumption or premise that starting characters will be itinerant "adventurers"
    * On the slightly crunchier side
    * Flexible in terms of campaign setup/style

The only systems that I can think of that truly fit these are #GURPS, #Reign and, to an extent, #BurningWheel , but I'm surely overlooking some gems.

  11. Might be running a #burningwheel game soon, and I'm thinking of shamelessly ripping off Arx Fatalis and NK Jemisin's #brokenearth novels. My quandary is which of these is most exciting:

    1) The immediate aftermath of the cataclysm as a group moves into a vault/shelter

    2) The internal dynamics of a community while the cataclysm still rages outside, no end in sight

    3) The fate of a group as the calamity begins to subside and leaving the "vault" becomes viable

  12. CW: Dracula Daily (Burning Wheel)

I lost the thread on ttrpgs several years ago & have not ever managed it pick it back up — but I’m thinking something like a #BurningWheel lifepath system might actually make for a pretty decent attempt here; would need to bend the setting a bit (which I am definitely not fluent enough to do competently!) but I still have the books; & it might be (just barely) fun enough to have a go at maybe

  13. #rpgaday2023 day 25. An #RPG I own but haven't played.

As with others in this thread, this is a depressingly large category for me as I'm very time poor for #ttrpg play atm (two gorgeous small children but free time is minimal these days). I'll go ahead and post the Mouse Guard RPG. It looks awesome and the #burningwheel engine is something I've wanted to give a spin (hueh) for ages. Hopefully I will find some time and a group for it one day

  14. Burning Wheel campaign idea: You are a Dark Elf, sworn to Spite and lording over a desolate world. The Last Strife put an end to the perfidious humans and the ridiculous dwarves - but now, the dead have started rising. This will not do; waking the dead clearly detracts from the Dark Elf victory over all others. Find dares disturb your people's legacy of deathly hegemony so brazenly. #ttrpg #rpg #burningwheel

  15. New blog post on dragons, dwarves, treasure hoards, and the value of creating stuff. Written in a slightly fever-affected state but edited for clarity.

  16. I have asked #chatGPT to generate characters for #burningwheel ,#torchbearer and #mouseguard and it delivered. For years I have used donjon.bin.sh as GM assistant, however recently I found chatGPT very useful for random generation of system-specific things.

  17. On the tenth day of Nerdmas, my true love gave to me…

    Ten dice a-rolling,
    Nine alignment values,
    Eight Kallax cubes,
    Seven deadly sins,
    Six-sided spaces,
    Five Platonic solids,
    4E D&D,
Three players who wanted to play the gay plane game,
    2d20 with Momentum, and
A night where my entire group is free.

    #Nerdmas

Not gonna lie, I love dice pools. Small ones like #Wildsea and #FitD, medium ones like #CortexPrime, large ones like #BurningWheel

  18. The Grind will kill you, if the monsters don't first! Torchbearer is NOT for the faint of the heart.

  19. #7TTRPGS that influenced me!

    1. #Numenera - the first game I played. Still has a big place in my heart.

    2. #BX & #OSE - played w/a referee who played with Gygax and Moldvay - really big experience for me.

    3. #DND5e - not my favourite, but the reason a lot of us are here!

    4. #BurningWheel

    5. #StarsWithoutNumber - learned I can't run scifi!

    6. #Microscope - did you know I CAN make a world?! I didn't before.

    7. #HoneyHeist (& other gshowitt titles). Really made me feel confident as a GM.

  20. @TylerRoseRPG For me, the threshold question is what is the crunch in service of?

Really crunchy mechanics in support of being a game or building a narrative? #Lancer #ICON #2d20 #BurningWheel #Torchbearer

    Sign me up!

Crunchy mechanics in support of “realism” or system mastery? I’m looking at you Shadowrun, Cyberpunk, etc. If your system has a gun list I’m almost certainly not interested.

  21. #5and5 #TTRPG seems to be the thing to do right now!

    Most recently played:
    1. #MountainHome
    2. #SavageWorlds
    3. #HeroQuestGlorantha
    4. #Kingdom
    5. #BurningWheel

    Want to play:
    1. #L5R 5th edition. I thought I was allergic to needing custom dice but these I really like.
    2. #FabulaUltima
    3. #Wanderhome
    4. #Ironsworn
    5. #BurningWheel

Not necessarily in that order. Prioritising is hard…
