On 10 March 2021, I had only just fallen asleep when my phone started buzzing. Then another notification, and another. In a matter of minutes, 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. And not the cloud-computing kind.
Most of them were physically going up in a column of smoke in Strasbourg.
My wife looked at me and asked if I wanted a coffee. I nodded. It was going to be a very long day.
At EuroBSDCon 2026, I won't be giving a theoretical lecture on high availability. Instead, I’m going to tell the raw story of that night: the emergency recovery, the architectural choices that actually saved us, and the ones that crumbled under pressure (because we rarely talk about what fails).
Most of all, I’ll explain why that night changed my perspective, and why I’ve come to see BSD systems not just as operating systems, but as essential, practical tools for building simpler, more resilient infrastructure.

This morning I was thinking about something: one of the reasons why every enthusiast should consider going to a BSDCon is simple.
I eat a lot and I still come back slimmer 😄
2024 - EuroBSDCon: ate twice as much as usual, came back from Dublin 1 kg lighter.
2025 - BSDCan: breakfasts that could cover a whole day’s calories, huge delicious meals... came back from Ottawa 0.5 kg lighter.
2025 - EuroBSDCon: double breakfast (sweet + savory), massive lunches, delicious dinners (including a huge pizza, as @outofcreativity, @angie and @mwl can confirm) and still came back 0.5 kg lighter.Positive emotions burn calories.
So come to BSDCons: you’ll come back happy and slimmer!

“#BSDcon is a conference to support BSD and its contributors. It's great and I hope to attend someday. I wish we'd built our ISP on it thirty years ago lol but I chose some proprietary garbage because it promised simplicity and failed miserably”

More about the 2024 @bsdtv #BSDCon push: All of this is about driving down and ideally eliminating A/V RENTAL COSTS. The technology has slowed down nicely for some key components and we should get years’ of use out of them. The “big room “ 1160 @bsdcan used a trial configuration with great results , short of the surprise that my camera only speaks 29.97 FPS! But jhb@ helped Patrick and Andrew work around that.
