CW: CW: Child abuse, family trauma
One thing that has always irritated me is how often films, books, and television treat reconciliation with abusive parents as the inevitable "happy ending."
No matter what happened, the story bends toward forgiveness. The parent sheds a single tear, offers a half-hearted apology (or even none at all) and suddenly decades of cruelty dissolve because family is family. Biology is elevated into something almost sacred, as though sharing DNA creates a moral obligation that overrides violence, neglect, humiliation, or terror.
It doesn't.
For many survivors, that narrative isn't heartwarming. It's isolating. It whispers that if you haven't reconciled, you must be the one who failed. That enduring abuse is somehow nobler than walking away. That preserving "the family" matters more than preserving yourself.
What about the child locked in a dark room while they cried? The child physically assaulted as "discipline"? The child touched in ways no child should ever be touched? The child who grew up under constant humiliation, ridicule, and belittling until they learned to apologize simply for existing? Are they expected to erase all of that because the credits need a sentimental ending?
And what of those who never got the chance? Those whose abuse ended only because their lives did?
Stories that insist every broken family can (and should) be repaired don't just ignore reality. They erase millions of people whose healthiest, bravest decision was to leave.
Sometimes the healthiest family is the one you build yourself, from friends, partners, neighbours, and kindred spirits who choose you every single day.
Not every story deserves reconciliation. Some deserve survival.
Disclosure: I have no contact with my parents, and I don't want any. For reasons. No, thank you. I am not sorry.

Four Science Backed Strategies To Stop A Vicious Cycle of Self Defeating Thoughts
SSPL/Getty Images The phrase “chew the cud” means to further chew partly digested food but many of us use it to mean something rather more abstract. The scientific word for this is rumination: A process of breaking big things into smaller parts that can then be dealt with or used. It’s apt that we use the same word for the human tendency to feast and dwell on our troubles. While researchers are still working out exactly what rumination involves, it is generally used to mean excessive, […]https://onlinemarketingscoops.com/2026/07/07/stop-a-vicious-cycle-of-self-defeating-thoughts/

In conflict, we experience our own reactions as justified responses while perceiving our partner’s as attacks. They’re doing the same. Both feel blamed. Both notice the other’s defensiveness more than their own. The blame pattern itself is the problem, not who started it.
