Former USSR chess grandmaster Boris Spassky dies at 88.

Boris Spassky, the Soviet chess grandmaster who learned to play as an orphan – eventually becoming the informal face of the USSR in the politically-infused "match of the century" against American Bobby Fischer – died on Thursday at 88.

One of the epic battles in #chess and in #geopolitics was the 1978 World Chess Championship between #AnatolyKarpov and #ViktorKorchnoi. Many of us know about the highly touted 1972 championship when #BobbyFischer defeated #BorisSpassky and the #Soviet chess machine. The 1978 match was even crazier and the chess just as brilliant. This time, though, the #USSR and #KGB retained the title (well... it was Karpov who won). However, the end of a great era was finally closing.
