@flauschtext Do you know anything about the #Bookrastinating admins? Did they announce anything? Are they on Mastodon?

Since my bookwyrm instance, bookrastinating.com is still down, maybe forever. I'll tell you about this book I'm reading. It's called Toxic and it's by Helga Flatland. All the characters are horrible. The story is horrible. It's like a car crash. I can't look away but I hate it. #bookrastinating #WhatImReadingNow

For those who are/were on #Bookrastinating , maybe there will still be some life for the instance yet.

Oh yes.
I mean, it's _perfectly acceptable_ if you decide that you can no longer make the effort to maintain the instance. Most of the admins are unpaid volunteers, after all.
But if you do so, the way to do it is to tell your users: "I am going to close this instance down, please transfer your account to another instance!", with a few periodic reminders to stragglers. _Not_ "Okay, the instance seems no longer working because of some technical problem. I guess this is as good a time as any to quit."
Fortunately, I saw this coming with thefolklore.cafe and migrated in time - others were not so lucky. But #bookrastinating caught me off guard, if this is indeed the end of the instance.

Bookrastinating, one of the largest Bookwyrm instances, has been down since May 3. There was an update same day that they were looking into it.
Since then there have been no updates. The admin has been posting normally on their main account with no mention of it. That sucks.
We're all volunteering here, so it can be clunky. Life can get in the way. But communication is bare minimum here.

Been on a reading binge these last few days and carrying it into the next year as well. Follow me on #Bookwyrm! https://bookrastinating.com/user/arnodegroote

Do you people know #Bookwyrm? The Fediverse alternative to Goodreads?
I am on a particular instance called https://bookrastinating.com/
Would love to connect to more #Fediverse friends, and be inspired by what you are reading!
Edit: I didn't add my actual Bookwyrm account 🤦: @misha

""... the refusal of so many environmentalists to consider responses to the climate crisis that would upend the economic status quo forces them to place their hopes in solutions—whether miracle products, or carbon markets, or “bridge fuels”—that are either so weak or so high-risk that entrusting them with our collective safety constitutes what can only be described as magical thinking.""
— Naomi Klein: This Changes Everything
-
"And yet still, at the upper echelons of the climate movement, our soaring emissions are never blamed on anything as concrete as the fossil fuel corporations that work furiously to block all serious attempts to regulate emissions, and certainly not on the economic model that demands that these companies put profit before the health of the natural systems upon which all life depends. Rather the villains are always vague and unthreatening—a lack of “political will,” a deficit of “ambition”—while fossil fuel executives are welcomed at U.N. climate summits as key “partners” in the quest for “climate solutions.”"

@bookrastinating Hi Bookrastinating people. Thanks a lot for making your server available for people like me. I'm a happy user.
I was just wondering how/to what extent the #Bookrastinating community is connected to the wider #Bookwyrm world?
As you make clear, the "Discover" option (https://bookrastinating.com/discover) shows me "what's new in the local bookrastinating.com community", but I suppose the Bookwyrm community is bigger than that?

Do #Bookwyrm and #Bookrastinating not draw from the same sources? We get different results when searching on one versus the other -- if we add a book to one doesn't it become available for the other?
(Would it be preferable to stick to one federated book tracking platform?) -
My #reading backlog on my website is finally up to date with my #Bookrastinating account lol
-
2/ For the record, my first book is on #Bookrastinating, but apparently it hasn't imported to #BookWyrm yet - so you might have to click on "Load results from other catalogues" to find it.
-
Question: Are #Bookwyrm and #Bookrastinating actually federated with each other?
I have an account on the latter, but unless I am mistaken I can't actually find anything from the former.
EDIT: Okay, apparently you _can_ find books and users on other Bookwyrm instances, but it requires some extra steps - for instance, you need to "Load results from other catalogues" if you want to find books from other instances, or type in the full account name (such as "[email protected]") if you want to find another user.

A little bit more than a week ago I read and discussed "Anti-Semite and Jew" by Jean-Paul #Sartre with some friends.
I wrote down some of my thoughts:

Who is the owner of #Bookrastinating? I am having some issues I need help with.
-
Hopefully #Bookrastinating implements this so I can easily move over from #Bookwyrm.social.

Is it a feature or a bug that a comment on a #bookwyrm instance - in this case #bookrastinating - including hashtags does not show up when I click one of those hashtags on mastodon? For instance, while using this mastodon account, and while following my bookrastinating account, checking out #GraphicNovel does not find my comments although i recently used that hashtag, the comments are in my time line when I specifically scroll back, and the hashtag is there.
-
@breadandcircuses Nice. I'm trying to like/share your review from my #bookrastinating account, but when I look up your #bookwyrm account there, the book isn't there. The different bookwyrm instances can share/like each others content, no?

is it just me getting a bunch of server errors something went wrong?

I think my predilection for reading books the last few years might be the result of how easy it is to track reading books. I spent many hours listening to the History of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan, but at the end of it, it was only the fact that I then went on to read his book based on all of those hours that was recorded for posterity.
I finished an audiobook recently, and marked it as completed at Bookrastinating. Then I started a podcast that has been recommended to me repeatedly. If it were a podcast with an unknown number of episodes that went on and on, I might not even think of the two activities as similar, despite both involving spoken audio I listen to in the same personal contexts (mostly during exercise). But this podcast is ten episodes long, with each episode about an hour long, so it is very, very much like starting a ten-hour audiobook.
At the end of these ten hours, I might know more, or be more entertained, or both, but I won’t have anything to record the event and look back at later, no trigger for memories in years to come, like I will with the audiobook that preceded it in that personal time slot.
Although I had not actively considered it before starting this post, both the podcast season and the novel are the first entries in a trilogy. At least for now. It might be more likely that the podcast produces a fourth season than the author writes another book in that series, but there are a number of series of audiobooks that go on for many volumes. I count 48 “seasons” of Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct available for me to listen to, for example.
So why is is a seven-hour audiobook a “book,” while a ten-hour podcast season is not?
So now it is.
https://bookrastinating.com/book/428813/s/blowback-season-1
It turns out to already be a book on GoodReads, but BookWyrm relies on user-generated content, and I might be the first BookWyrm user to listen to Blowback Season 1, making it my job to add it to the database. If, as I suspect I will, I decide to listen to season 2 later, I’ll add that then.

@[email protected] By accident I uploaded the English-language version of the book cover on #bookrastinating, which is attached to the review above. Updated just now to the correct cover: the original Dutch version, which I think is better (see below).

Hmm... Seems there's some issue when trying to connect to the #bookrastinating instance from #calckey.
I managed to find my Bookrastinating account (@[email protected]) after some work, but the Calckey-client wouldn't let me follow it, as the follow icon just keeps loading.
Similarly, I can't find my calckey-profile when searching for it on Bookrastinating eiter, so...
Is this a compability problem or something else? Suggestions, anyone?

@hw @bookrastinating Thank you, Heikki. I will explore other #Bookwyrm instances. Some of my #Goodreads #books and #reviews etc #imported extremely easily. The #Bookrastinating setup is very like Goodreads and largely pleasing. But it's not like #Mastodon and will take some learning!
