  1. The detail that goes a long way : etched copper sitting on tooled leather !
A raised title plate is a happy title plate.

Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson.
And as usual, the original book is, of course, secondhand.

  2. A new post from my crafting page.
    This time another #handmade book.
With a nerd twist, this book is "Adventure Gamewriters Handbook for #commodore64"
I printed it because one of my new personal project is a text adventure for commodore 64. But I also love #bookbinding so, when you need to print a book (no longer printed) why not make your own copy?

  3. The whim took me to make a sketchbook with paper I’d torn out of a decrepit hardback book. I decided not to even up the edges. I glued a photo from a calendar onto some cardboard, and then used red linen thread to put everything together with Coptic stitch.

    Spouse has taken this on.

  4. This week I spent time taking apart a retail binding, reducing the textblock size to 30%, inserted loose additions, resewed and converted from a flat back multiple section case binding to a multiple section pamphlet binding.

  5. last night, a friend and I recycled some old PCBs left over from another project into notebook covers! We cut the pages and stitched the spine by hand.

  6. Hand bookbinder and conservator Adelene Koh has expanded her artistic repertoire to include sculpture which she creates using bookbinding techniques. Made with paper and fiber there's something about their elegant simplicity that keeps drawing the eye.

  7. These are just acrylic paints so I have to worry about how they'll deal with getting wet if I actually use them for anything. So I decided to treat that final print with my 50/50 beeswax and mineral oil finish. I already had this made and available so it was just a matter of rubbing it on and buffing it off. It definitely makes it shinier.

I know this isn't great art, but it's fun and, with luck I can use the finished sheets in #bookbinding projects. That's the plan, anyway. (2/2)

  8. @LeahPrice

A day trip to London Centre for Book Arts in Stratford might be worth inspiration.

Simon and Ira were inspired by the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

  9. We're going on a little family holiday soon and Jupes wanted a new journal to write/art in for the trip. I made them this last night, they picked the colors. Then I made myself one. Then I drew Jupiter's book inside my book. Jupes said this is journal-ception.

French stitch is still my favorite by far. Coptic is basically dead to me, lol.

  10. Outside and inside views of the flap, beautifully sewn with a thin strip of the same vellum. I tried reproducing this in paper and it's just not possible with a paper strip. But it can potentially be done with a ribbon and tapestry needle instead. #bookbinding

  11. Another #bookbinding project did few weeks ago, that gave me some headaches (when something doesn't want to be finished...).

  12. Okay #AskFedi does anyone have any text-based beginner resources on how to get started with turning a software manual that I have as a digital file into a fully bound book by hand?

Like, I imagine I'm going to prepare the text by using a word processor to properly layout the digital file, then I'm going to print it, and then I'm going to somehow do some folding and cutting magic to wrangle the printed A4 pages into something in the proper format, and then I'm going to use some arcane magicka to properly connect the pages and create a cover.

Resources about any step in the process appreciated, e. g. layouting, zinemaking, book binding, et cetera.

I'm also going to look things up myself on the web (yay #Marginalia), but I'd like human pointers too.

  13. Found this great illustration that shows European versus American #paper sizes. Not only do I wish that the United States would switch to the metric system already, but I wish we had the same paper sizes. #bookbinding #PaperArts

  14. To make a long story short, I am forty-two, and for most of my life, I have been interested in the so-called blind trades, both for pleasure and as genuine crafts. These include chair caning, mat making, basketry, broom making, rug weaving, yarn weaving, bookbinding, soap making, pottery, etc. I didn't include brush making because that requires a real workshop and can be dangerous from what I've heard. Likewise, piano tuning takes many years to learn, though i believe there is a school for that. I wrote to many blind schools asking for assistance, guidance, or even some general advice, but none wrote back to me. I contacted a mainstream basket weaver, but although she was nice, she couldn't help me. I found a very good series on broom-making on Youtube, though I must check to see if it's still there. The problem with many videos is that they explain things in a visual way i.e. "look at the diagram", "follow what you see me doing here", or the hosts talk while they're doing an important step that they're not describing, etc. Regardless, I started learning chair caning, but the place was far from my home, and I kept having issues with paratransit, so I had to stop. I have, however, made soap using the melt and pour method several times, and I've worked on both a lap loom (made of cardboard many times), an inkle loom once, and used a potholder kit at least once. I've also taken several pottery classes, but to go beyond air-dry clay or the type that can be baked in a home oven, it's necessary to have a kiln, which is prohibitively expensive.

Having said all of that, has anyone here ever been involved with any of these, or perhaps something I didn't mention? If so, was/is it as a hobby or to sell crafts? Where were you taught and how i.e. all hands-on, or with books, manuals, etc? If you sold/sell them, how did/do you do so i.e. through a workshop or factory, at a traditional flee market or craft fair, online via Etsy or Ebay, or do you have your own site? Would you be able to give me any general tips or advice regarding your craft?
