#Sustainability tip: if you have a (stainless) #steel or #iron object with #rust (brown, Fe2O3) on it, you can lengthen its lifespan by boiling it in regular #water. This will slowly turn the rust into black iron #oxide (Fe3O4), also known as #magnetite. Fe3O4 does not expand and flake like rust, so this slows down the decay of your tool. This is one of the processes known as #bluing.
I tried this with a few rusty household objects and it really worked!
