I've temporarily disabled the permission that lets existing users invite new users to join blorbo.social.
We've seen a handful of new users who've applied for new accounts with plausible-seeming reasons, been accepted, and then sent invites to all their bot friends with ai-generated profiles etc.
Just in case it isn't blindingly obvious: we don't want spammy bots with ai-generated profiles here.
I would love to find a way to keep user invites enabled for trusted users. At the moment, though, it looks like the options are: (1) free-for-all or (2) nothing.
For now, new accounts will require applications, and will have to wait for a mod to review and approve them.
Please put something in your application that makes it clear you're an actual human person with an interest in fandom! essays are *not* required, but it helps to tell us something that you're currently fannish about.
We'll be stricter about rejecting applications that don't seem genuine, which means we might reject some that we would have previously accepted.
If your application gets rejected, you are welcome to apply again. As long as you get a bit more fannish on the next go-round, you'll probably get accepted.

Recent additions to the types of applications we reject:
- person wants to join because they think we're federated with baraag (we're not)
- application looks like it was generated by AI -

Blorbo.social will go offline for about an hour, from around 6am UTC Monday 12 May, for some scheduled maintenance.

Did we reject your application for an account on blorbo.social?
If so, it's highly likely that it's because your application didn't mention anything fannish or blorbo-related.
We're not that selective, and we accept most applications.
We usually reject an application if it seems like the person applying doesn't know that blorbo.social is for fannish people.
You don't have to be particularly fannish yourself, as long as it doesn't bother you to be on a fandom-focused instance.
If you've randomly selected blorbo.social without knowing anything about it, this might not be the right instance for you. There are lots of other instances you can try. Look here for some suggestions: https://instances.social
If you still want an account on blorbo.social, you have a couple of options:
- If you know someone who already has an account here, ask them to send you an invite. This will enable you to create an account immediately without having to wait for a mod to review it.
- Otherwise, just apply again, and this time make sure you mention something about fandom or blorbos. Unless you were an absolute fuckwit in your first application (extremely rare), we won't have blacklisted you. We probably won't even realise that you've previously applied.

Wev'e updated Blorbo.Social's **About** page.
Main changes are:
- removed or replaced broken links
- removed UK from list of countries to consider in regards to our "no illegal content" rule
- added brief comments in parentheses about the remaining countries: Germany (where our server is based) and Australia (where I live)
- removed mention of inviting people to join our volunteer crew (we're not currently looking for more volunteers) -

We've updated Blorbo.Social's privacy policy. The only change is that our donations processor is now Open Collective. Previously, it was Patreon.

I've turned off image caching temporarily, since the spammers have started attaching big images to their spam messages. *sigh*
This means that images may take a bit longer to load than usual.
I'm assuming that the spammers will get bored soon & wander off, at which point we'll turn the image caching back on.

This Sunday, 19th November 2023, will be the first anniversary of blorbo.social's official opening.
I'll post a thread with some stats & stuff on Sunday.
Blorbo-havers, is there anything special you'd like me to report on for our blorboversary?

Downtime was about 3 minutes. Everything should be good now. 🤞
If you notice any more problems, please let me know!

Update 2: Our lovely @hosting has restarted our background processes. They'll take a little while to get caught up with the queue, but you should start seeing things improving now.
We'll have a short downtime about 12 hours from now, for some maintenance and optimisation.
-
Update: there's a problem with our sidekiq processes, which manage import of post information & other techy things.
As far as I can tell, this isn't something I can fix myself, so I've asked our hosting service (toot.io) to investigate.
They're usually pretty quick to respond, so I hope we'll have this sorted soon.
Thanks so much everyone for reporting & helping to investigate. ❤️❤️❤️

A few blorbo-havers have reported that they can't see images hosted on other servers.
It's not happening to me, so I'm finding it hard to troubleshoot.
If this is happening to you, please reply with:
- what client you're using (e.g. mastodon website, tusky, fedilab, ivory...)
- a link to at least one post where you've encountered the problem.
If you'd rather send me a DM than reply in public, that's fine too!

Temporarily limiting mastodon.social. they seem to have a problem with spambots signing up.
Blorbo-havers can still follow people with accounts there, but shouldn't see any new pornbot DMs. 🤞

Dear Friends of Blorbo, you are all very welcome here! I hope that we can continue to offer a free home to our likeminded Blorbo-Lovers indefinitely.
We have some lovely supporters who are able to help with server costs by contributing financially.
Currently, our costs are around $120 per month, and we're receiving contributions of around $40 per month.
If you have some spare funds and would like to help out, our Open Collective page is here: https://opencollective.com/blorbosocial

Sorry guys, I already have to suspend this test & go back to the regular unfiltered trends.
1. My health is not great right now, and I'm tired all the time. This means that I can't do the braining real good.
2. It seems like there really isn't enough fandom-related content right now to make it worth filtering the trends for you.
Might consider it again in the future, but for now I'm going to let it go.
-
Hmm, it looks like there aren't enough trending fandom-related posts or links to make it worth filtering those for fandom at the moment. I'll concentrate on filtering the hashtags only, and will keep an eye on posts and links for possible future action.
-
Back from holiday, recovering from travel. (That chronic fatigue life, hooray!)
I'll probably make a start on reviewing our Explore (trending) items today, to show only fandom-related trends. This is an experiment. I'll keep it up for about a month. After that, I'll ask for your feedback on whether to keep doing it.
Also: thanks to everyone who submits reports! We take reports seriously and investigate every one. Crypto scammers are busy again.

Unusable in what way?Our Blocklist exists to serve the needs of our users. We have reasons recorded for every blocked server, but those reasons are only visible to admins & mods. Any of our users can ask why a particular server is blocked or limited, and we'll tell them.
