Sometimes I get to wondering why, if white-tailed deer are just as common as black-tailed deer, all 47 of my observations, near and far, are of black-tailed deer.
iNaturalist has the answer. I don't spend much time in white-tailed deer territory.

A young #buck came visiting today. Then one of his buddies came along too. They’re not bothered by the rain & I’m not bothered they’re eating the plants. They were here on this land long before humans. In 1 photo we can see the marks where one of the bucks shed his antlers. He’s injured his leg somehow, has slight limp. Spring’s coming & the beautiful cycle of life starts anew.

In ancient Japanese tales the #deer is considered the messenger of the gods and divine servants. Mimi came by on her wanders, along with a young buck and another doe. Mimi knows us now, and will let me walk alongside her, at a distance, in the forest. My partner & I rent a cottage on the traditional hunting grounds of the #lekwungen speaking Peoples. The lands have game trails crisscrossing in every direction. When we first moved here the deer paths would sometimes lead me astray... This is a portrait of a #BlackTailedDeer #buck who is a wandering neighbour. He is magnificent.
