  4. Just heard an interesting talk about #BioPlastics by [email protected] at #OggCamp.

    Alex was trying to make plastics from various materials at the Manchester HackSpace.

    He was mostly using a material called Kylozin, which can make a substance called "Nacre", which has potential as a plastic replacement.

    His end goal is to make an I-beam from the stuff.

  13. Instead of oil and land: Researchers at #CharitéBerlin have engineered new strains of bacteria 🦠 that can produce #chemicals ⚗️ from industrial waste 🗑️. Using this technology, things like #bioplastics and #biofuels could be produced more sustainably. The team achieved this feat by getting the bacteria to follow a completely new type of metabolism called #RespiroFermentation. Viva la #sustainability! 🥳
