  1. So, earthquake measurement. Everyone knows that the numbers are part of the Richter Scale, yes?

    Except they're not. That scale fell out of scientific favour in the 1980s and has been replaced since then by the Moment Magnitude Scale. The numbers are similar for small-to-medium earthquakes but the MM scale is far more accurate about the energy released during the biggest, most devastating earthquakes.

    Anyway, the point of this post is that the MM Scale has an upper bound of 10.6. Wikipedia helpfully describes why that is:

    The end of the scale is at the value 10.6, corresponding to the assumption that at this value the Earth's crust would have to break apart completely.
