So a numpty decided that it was a grand idea to go up on the moors, after two very hot heatwaves and not much rain, too let of fireworks. We drove through the smoke as we passed Manchester on our way north. Even 30miles away on the other side of the city, the smoke was too thick to go for a run yesterday. Luckily today the wind changed direction and I could go out for a run on my somewhat local trails.
There's something to running familiar trails as you don't have to get the map out to look at to find an alternative route, if you want to go longer or there's live stock in the way. Though today's "slowdown/timekiller/rest stop" was a fella repairing a dry stone wall, just amazing skills.

Morning 🌞
21.16km
26°c 85% humidity at 5:28am
32°c 64 % humidity with 5k left to goTwo words for this long run; Mad Brutal
The sun drained me at 15k, and the last 6k felt like the hardest distance I've ever run.Took a lot of shade breaks when I could find some, and got through 2 litres in the bladder & 750ml in bottles, with gel mix electrolytes,.
Honestly I need more and better fueling to run well in these conditions. Got it done - amazingly

Well these rest and recovery days really only works if you actually do some running around these days ;)
Inspired by Courtney's anticlockwise winning run at Hard Rock 100, I went anticlockwise on today's run and also set a PB. Though I think it was more down to that it was bone dry and not the normal quagmire this route often can be.
Oh look @robchapman we are in your old playground ;)

Morning 🌞
6k (and a bit) Hill Run
25°c 79% Humidity @ 0533hrsApparently a good hill session is good for the soul, not least because what goes up must come down, plus you can always do the down hills with a bit more wild abandon, in celebration of the grind up.
So, Xemxija Bay for the sunrise, which was the mini hill chalked off, before the 3km climb up and over Wardija hill and back home. Another really fun, all be it moist run.

Morning 🌞
8k
24°c 85% humidity @ 0536 Hrs
I knew.where I was going this morning for my run, and the vibe was simply to have fun, because not everything needs to be a plan.
...and this was a whole bag of fun - I decided on a relatively flattish route, and, oh yes 'DON'T spare the horses!'
Had a moment when I said to myself 'OMG! You're running fast, can you go faster?" then burst out laughing like a big kid...so much fun!

Well that second up hit hard. The first lump was along the ridge where second was directly up Fell running style, had to stop and replace lungs a few time. But we found the first Welsh trig of the year. Stunning view and a stream for Paddy to cool down and wash my toes as there was still a few buggy places up top.
I did about 3k on the Dragon's Back Race route, can I now say that I'm a DNF'er on an Ultra Run ? ;)
Oh and which one of you lot (points at fellow mastodon trail runners) entered my lass's dreams last night and proclaimed that you were a painter and decorater?

Well the run didn't remove the depression and sadness of how dirty the yUK has become. People really don't care anymore do they. I tried for most of this week to ignore it, but what I saw last night, just tipped me over.
Going out on a run on the mainland, I would sometimes come back with a bit of litter, a wrapper of some sort and now and again a drink bottle/can. Everything could easily fit in a dog poop bag and a side pocket of my running vest. We rarely had to do any litter picking when parked up for a night and if we did it would be a small amount.
Since arriving into the yUK every time we parked up, we litter picked and witnessed overflowing bins. Last night at a location where people clearly come for hikes or to sit and enjoy their chippy tea. I've just done a litter pick and put a bag full into the provided bin.
A young couple had their take away in their car, open the door and dumped their litter, under 10m away from the bin. And they drove off, I jumped out of HQ and made a clear show of what I was doing but they were not looking as they speed away. A bit later on the last bio break for the mutts for the night, I picked up 4 1L bottles someone else had just dumped.
On today's run I could have filled two 30+ liters bin bags with the amount of litter laying about, heck even broken car parts, just why!?!
Fecking depressing, I'm not saying that the mainland is spotless, they got their dirty spots too and fly tipping, but at least it doesn't feel like you are running through a garbage dump when out and about.

Afternoon 🌞
Totally new route this morning
Had to use Organic Maps (on the fly) to plot my way through the trail part.
Left at 0528Hrs
Temp 26c Humidity 77% and a pleasinig stiff wind15K
10k of which was done on roads
5K trail run - though to call the trail bit a run is generous, it was climbing, scrambling, sliding hiking and running...and it was so much fun.I've a bucket load of photos which I'll try and post, when I'm not doing chores.

The near 6km loop failed as the path was totally overgrown with brambles and I could see on the other side signs saying private land. But Paddy got to tap another trig point and we enjoyed some lovely bridle ways.

First run after nearly two weeks heat-atus to see if the legs and lungs still knew how to do this thing. Could probably have gone further but didn't want to have a blowout on the first run back. Now I just got to get back into the habit again, run off a few months worth of French baked goods, run a marathon before we return to the land of crossaints ;)

Morning 🌞
8K
Another very moist morning, with the 5am temp again at 26°c, but the humidity was a smidge higher than yesterday, at 92%
Got out nice and early again for my run + deliberately taking it very easy because of the warm conditions, new route, along and up Xemxija hill toward the outskirts of Mellieha which made a nice change.
38*c possible again today, so I'll enjoy the cooler(ish) before the sun climbs to its peak.

9k
Out as dawn was breaking so I could get to a really good spot to watch the sunrise...3k in and found a vantage point...then after witnessing the birth of another fine morning got my ass into gear and got the rest of my run done.
A cool 26°c 85% humidity, we've an amber temperature warning in place for today, so getting stuff done in this.relative cool air is always a bonus

Started out for my run well before sunrise - 24°c 87% humidity.
After 1km I inexplicably dropped my ½ litre soft bottle and the lid split (had some words!) So, took a picture pre sunrise & headed home picked up my two ¼ litre soft bottles, then back out again (this added an extra 2k onto what I had planned to do)
But considerable upside was capturing the full sunrise, and this being an enjoyable, gentle low HR, 7k.

A bit sad that the heat wave is due to break on Sunday but not enough cooling before we return to the yUK, so no last run before our travels. Looking at a trip via Wales as we head north to my old trails. That should set me up nicely for my trail marathon in October in Scotland. But because of the hiatus, heat break, I need to cram the training into fewer week, oh well I've never been known for not doing dumb things ;)

Good morning 🌞
Quick around my local countryside route and back this morning, got out before the sunrise and back while it was still lowish on the horizon.
Another warm humid morning 24°c 85% Humidity, meant dripping wet on my return.
And my post run treat...Summer edition Red Bull (lime 🍋🟩) it's very good, like a very light in taste red bull, with mojito... delicious 😋
Chores now before I get back to my writing.

Just a short 6km this morning, out to Xemxija Bay at 6am, and then back over the side of Wardija.hill and home. Always enjoy a bit of a climb, though with the humidity so high this morning it was a test, saying that, even the flatter sections were playing havoc with my heart rate.
Still, I got it done and feel splendid...moist, very moist...but splendid! 🤪

15k | Chose a route I don't do often, and ran it in reverse - nip any muscle memory in the bud,
This morning's conditions (26°c 92% humidity by the time the sun was up) I'm not entirely sure it was a wise route to take, definitely felt hard.Consumed 500ml electrolytes and most of only 1 litre of water in the bladder, but I was gassed, Managed to pass 800km for the year to date, not bad considering 3 months of injury

Out before sunrise, yay! Got a picture of the rising sun just as I reached my local Lidl (something about runners, bakeries and Lidl this week)
So, I name all my runs, because, why not...I call today 'A Lidl Sunrise'...sorry 😂
A gentle, consistent pace, keeping my HR below LT1. Very pleasing. And this week, a week of firsts since I got injured in early April - 1st 17K, 1st 3 runs in a week, 1st more than 30k total.

Well, that is my V-Alpha's converted from speed laces to normal laces, plus I punched in an extra hole so that I can now lace lock them....Immediately I can get them back to the way they felt when new, which is more glove like. I think repeated wet runs, then washing and drying, plus over a 1000km of this big runner pounding them just made them a bit looser, and a trad lace compensates better than a speed one for that fabric distortion.

8k this morning, pushed off early, I needed to see the sunrise, so made extra effort to get my ass into gear!
Out at 0543, it's really bloody humid - think, running while wrapped in a warm damp flannel, actual conditions: 21°c/96% humidity with a perfectly clear sky.
It was meant to be a zone 2 day, but I really just wanted to run hard and easy, plus HR goes out the window in this weather anyway, so speed instead.

A steady humid urban trails run'n'sniff, while HQ is in for her service. Driving around in the Pyrenees does work the breaks a fair bit. Good quite green lanes shared with cyclist in farmland just outside town. Only issue was the travelers encampment as they had loose dogs, lucky they stayed close to camp and didn't give chase after us. Plenty of streams to stop and dip Paddy boy.

Long run Monday - 17km
When I got up this morning, I turned to the other half and said "I really can't be bothered" So I'm wondering what I might have run if I had been 'bothered'!? 😂
Went off way too quickly today for the distance. It was a bit silly, especially with the temp at 7am pushing 24°c and 97% humidity. Next time, I'll start using some in run intelligence, with regards to pacing.

Well that didn't go to plan. Set off early to beat the heat for a half marathon and 800mEg. The first 3-4km I just coughed and couldn't get enough air in, no matter how slow I was going. This drained me so much, that when I got to the halfway point, and saw that the farmers were out moving their livestock around and would be using the tracks and mountains, I was hoping to use, I decided to call it a day.
I think it was a mix of pollen, dust and not fueling enough, that made me weak today. But it was a stunning morning out for it in a beautiful location.

Good morning 🌞
11K this morning... Started out with countryside then popped out onto the coast at Maghtab, with the super bright morning sun on my back for the last 5, then through the Salt Flats, no ducks about today and then back home.
It was quite the thrash today, a pretty speedy, undulating 10k - still a bit to go to beat my PB for 10, but I can feel my right foot now has a lot more power coming down through the chain.

Good morning 🌞
12.5k run to start the day.
I'd say, this was my most enjoyable run since I hurt my foot at the end of March, mainly because I wasn't thinking about my foot - just running.
So, hill to celebrate a seemingly better foot, getting plastered in soot from last week's explosion.
Sadly The Bird park is closed and quiet, which is very sad - hopefully they'll be open again soon, when the birdies are happier.
-
Stunning, great and spectacular day out, not that there was much running the first 5k or the following 5k and the 5k after that ;) A solid 700m up for the first part, then at around 2000m altitude the old service road was covered in rock falls and some snow and then turned into a dead end track. At the end there was a forestry house/shelter, which we had to climb up and around to get past. Then it was directly down, 250m in not a long distance, as it was a near a sher drop that serpentined it's way down past the concrete and iron snow protection for the village below. Then we hit then main busy path on this mountain, (as Brits would say it was like Blackpool Beach) where we meet 10 hikers and 6 trail runners for the next 3-4km down. Yet there was still another 3km to do before we could have a cooling down dip in the river.
