A Dozen Pages, Part 4 [ZINE]
This is the finishing post to a part of our zine project dubbed "A Dozen Pages". That is not a title, this part of the project has no title, these twelve pages were my contribution to a group project, the result of which was the abstract graphic novel A Kick in the Eye (2013). I will be sharing more abstract comic pages (for you to download and print!) at some point in the future, but right now I am not sure what I will post. It would be nice if The Fourth Labor of Elmer Olpuk finally saw the light of day, but that particular tale needs quite a bit of work. The twenty-four pages of My Favorite Martian Comics might be easier to post, but that is a huge commitment. I would like to add "Harrow" to our project, it is only five pages long, but it has an awkward square format - and I am not sure where I ferreted away its file. Which Endor?
Today, if you actually intend to read this, you are my Best Beloved, and it is time for me to tell you a story. There is an odd and unexplained tradition among the Inultaru that imagines the witch in the first book of Samuel in the Tanakh as a priestess or votary of one of the Ancient Dirt Mothers. Usually Irreshkwilmat, or sometimes Dahkaldi Inzorannuhk, whose mask is pictured in this unpublished Geranium Lake Properties comic. The Jackalopian story does not dwell much on the reason for King Saul's visit, except to say that the king needed the services of a necromancer, and his servants brought him to a witch who had gained a certain amount of notoriety in the village of Endor. This Geranium Lake Properties comic was considered for the sixth day of the Eleven Monsters Holiday but it did not quite fit our criteria for the Red Beast theme. It was red enough, but it was not impeccably beastly. This panel was originally part of a series Yost made to illustrate the Thirty-Fifth Anniversary Edition of Six Tales from the Glorious Assemblage of Haberdashers by Abby Ashier Chertsey. The third tale in that book ("The Rust-Stained Jug") is about a man named Mike Frick, aka the King of Millers. Mike is neither a king nor a miller; he inherited his title from his father, who was also not a king nor a miller. Mike comes from a long line of men who were known as the Kings of the Mills, yet none of them were kings and not one of them was a miller. Yost borrowed this character with Chertsey's permission, and put Mike Frick the King of Millers into a short story titled "The Fine and Deadly Difference between Zossiyan and Znayossion Yogurts". […] -
