  1. "Youth," Arthur F. Mathews, c. 1917.

    Mathews (1860-1945) was an American Tonalist painter who was also one of the founders of the American Arts and Crafts Movement.

    Tonalism was a style that was dominated by neutral hues or depicting scenes that were misty or with a colored atmosphere; it was crowded out by Impressionism and Modernism. The Arts and Crafts Movement, which included both fine art and decorative art, was all about artisanal, handcrafted works in natural materials, rejected mass-produced items by growing industries.

    An inhabitant of San Francisco, he was a director of the California School of Design. After the famous earthquake and fire, he opened a furniture store with his own designs, and was quite an influence on the city's rebuilding, painting a number of murals in various public buildings.

    And it's summer! Schools are letting out in my area...I can imagine the kids want to dance like this...
