#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 21: a San Francisco garden view for the final day of my solstice art advent calendar.
Happy solstice! 🌞
I finished this stained glass window this summer. My design features flowers that grow all over San Francisco: California poppies, Douglas irises, and angel's trumpets.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 20: Meema's tulip bowl.
My grandmother (my Meema) painted a tulip bowl still life when she was 16; her painting now hangs in my home. I was admiring the bowl's shape and thought, "maybe I could make that!"
So here is my Meema's tulip bowl, brought to life.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 17: Hetch Hetchy.
I brought clay home from the studio for crafts time with my kid. I don't have specialized pottery equipment at home, so I made this bowl using a wine bottle as a rolling pin, then draped the slab over a terra cotta planter. I was thinking of a flooded valley (like Hetch Hetchy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetch_Hetchy?wprov=sfla1) as I painted this with underglaze.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 16: vivid sunset.
I love using underglazes to paint gradients on my pottery. This cache pot was inspired by a particularly vivid sunset on a clear day.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 15: homage to Na'nízhoozhí.
As a kid I visited my grandmother who lived in Gallup, New Mexico, and she would take me to nearby Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni galleries. I was thinking about the pottery shapes and colors of the artwork from that area as I worked on this vase.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 13: lightning crack.
I made this berry strainer in my first pottery class last year and it cracked when I bisque fired it. 😭 I set it aside while I worked on other things . . .
. . . and then, a couple of months ago, it struck me: a lightning crack! ⚡

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 10: folded shibori.
One thing I love about Camp Mather, a family summer camp run by San Francisco, is the tie dye activities.
And this year I went a little bit beyond... I decided to dye a duvet cover (and pillow cases, naturally).

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 9: "Sunrise Meadow"
San Francisco has an amazing campground for families to camp in the summer, Camp Mather, located right outside of Yosemite. City kids get to roam free, and there's a "paint & sip" night for adults.
The paint brushes are a mess, but the fun is in hanging out and relaxing with other adults while our kids are off playing.
My painting is based on a photograph I took of a nearby field named "Sunrise Meadow."

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 8: layers of blue.
I had a several month break in taking pottery classes, and was worried that I would lose the knowledge I had built – but to my relief I picked things up quickly again when I recommenced classes. ☺️
One thing I particularly love about pottery is the trimming process (see https://www.lakesidepottery.com/Pages/Pottery-tips/Trimming-a-pot-Lakeside-Pottery-Tutorial.htm ), and I enjoy carving layers and textures as part of that process.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 7: ruffled.
This was the first large-ish pot I made on the wheel. Someone put a dent in the edge, so I decided to go along with it and created a ruffled edge.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 6: trees and flowers.
My partner made this trash can shed out of leftover redwood boards from an attic renovation, then my kid designed the mural and we painted it together.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 5: bringing the color back into my life.
My partner decided to make a trash can shed, and my kid asked if we could paint it. This was earlier in 2025; I had sunk into a depression and kept saying that I didn't really want to paint the shed.
My kid said, "that doesn't sound like you!"
Thanks to my kid's persistence, we painted the shed together. This was the back panel, designed by my kid, and by far my favorite part of the shed. 🌹🏵️🌻💠🪻

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 4: put a lid on it!
My first ever covered pot. It's functional! And currently it holds dog treats. 🐕

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 3: an early attempt at "collaring" (more on that here: https://kevinsceramics.com/collar-your-clay-in/#:~:text=Collaring%20refers%20to%20the%20process%20of%20gradually,adding%20elegance%20and%20functionality%20to%20your%20piece), a technique I learned in my intermediate pottery class in January.

#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 2: Papalo!
My kid received a cyanotype fabric kit and we've had fun making prints together. I made this in January using leaves and seed heads from a papalo plant. I love the texture and sense of depth created by the negative print.

Leading up to this year's winter solstice I'm participating in Art Advent Calendar. This year I'm trying to include only pieces that I worked on in 2025. Let's see how this goes. 😅
#ArtAdventCalendar 2025 Day 1: a pot I threw during a pottery class in January. The clay body is electric brown, with a blue-green glaze. I'm currently using the pot to root some lipstick plant cuttings.

#FlashbackFriday: my finale for Art Advent Calendar last year: a beaded lamp fringe that I made for a vintage lamp.
Looking forward to #ArtAdventCalendar starting again in just a couple of days!
