Europäische #Raumfahrt #history aus „goldenen Zeiten“ 2008 . #Otd startete die #Ariane5 mit dem ATV-1 , „Jules Verne „ zur #ISS . Begehbar und viel Platz für Proviant und Treibstoff konnten alle Astronauten 6 Monate darin schlafen. Denn in der ISS war es meist lauter . Und alle 7 ATVs in 6 Jahren hoben die ISS auf neue Bahn an . Alle wurden in Bremen montiert . Jedes verglühte in der Atmosphäre mit viel Abfall der ISS.

#OTD just three short years ago: #Ariane5 VA256 roared to life in French Guiana & powered into the sky, carrying the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to its destiny 🚀🛰️✨

And I was there, 5km away – plenty close enough, I can assure you 🙉

Also worth recalling that the launch & flight to L2 were so perfect, enough propellant was saved to more than double the mission lifetime – thank you, Arianespace 🙇‍♂️

[Joyeux anniversaire, #XMMNewton ! 🥂 🎉 ] 25 ans. Cela fait 25 ans que l' #Observatoire XMM-Newton de l' European Space Agency - ESA lancé par une fusée #Ariane5 scrute notre #Univers dans le domaine des rayons X.

This is #Ariane5 VA256 in the Bâtiment d'Assemblage Final (BAF) at CSG Kourou in French Guiana on 23 December 2021 🌴

In the fairing at the top, is the NASA/ESA/CSA #JWST, two days ahead of its big day 🚀

And it has had many other big ones since, out there 1.5 million kilometres away, orbiting L2 🛰️✨

@spaceflight Is there any benefit of #Ariane6 over #Ariane5 ? The payload mass sounds very similar, so is it cheaper? Given that people were thinking about reusable rockets in the 80s, I still can't understand what the point of the new launcher is.

Ariane 5 upper stages are located mainly in #GTO & just a small delta-v (1,6km/s) is left to reach the #Moon 🌙. Since the debris 🗑️ is picked up in orbit, small propulsion units are sufficient for the remaining transport to the moon. More than 150 tons of #aluminum can be regained ♻️ from #Ariane5 upper stages alone.
