Markarian 817 is een Seyfert 1-sterrenstelsel dat ongeveer 430 miljoen lichtjaar van ons is verwijderd in de richting van het sterrenbeeld Draco – Draak. Het bevat een supermassief zwart gat met een massa van 81 miljoen zonsmassa.

Paper day for everybody involved and excited about #eRosita ! Here is the paper by my Kostas Migkas and his colleagues who, for the first time, performed a robust cross-calibration of eROSITA vs Chandra and XMM using a large galaxy cluster sample. The findings are crucial for a wide range of future X-ray cluster studies, and future eROSITA data will further improve these constraints!

Why space-based telescopes like #XMMNewton or #JWST? Because our atmosphere is incredibly good at filtering out radiation that is not in the visible or radio range.

That's obviously pretty good for humanity overall, but kinda inconvenient if we want to observe highly energetic X-ray photons from close to black holes or peer deep into stellar nurseries using infra-red light.
