A Forgotten Practice

A lot of successful people underestimate the power of human capital. The conversations are too transactional; apprenticeship and shadowing someone is not something that comes to the minds of urban educated population. Senior folks have stopped thinking beyond employment and partnerships.

India’s unorganized sector is far more generous in this regard where providing a platform to someone to stand on is much more comfortable than getting benefited out of them. A mechanic, a shopkeeper, a contractor – will take a kid on with no clear return in mind, just to give them an opportunity to stand. They do it more freely than people with far more to spare.

And it not just helps the society or the nation but also the leader themself either directly by the inputs and work of their followers or indirectly in various form factors.

This mindset that junior folks don’t match the caliber of already successful people is hurting the leaders too in ways they cannot predict beforehand. We need to start seeing humans as equals; even a newborn can teach you a lot about life.

Far more can be done if people come together but we have created this artificial scarcity around us. The world is abundant and wealth is infinite. Extend your hand out for others and you will reach your goals faster.

I was chatting with an artist friend last week about an artwork we have long admired- Francois Morellet's Deconstructed Circle- where the artist suspends neon arches that would make a circle together. It appears that the tubes are hanging from their electrode wires- a big electrical no no that seems to be working for him.

I have a bunch of 10 foot straight neon tubes collecting dust across the warehouse, and a big fancy test transformer, so I gave it a go. Felt wrong in every way to suspend those tubes like that... but seems to work just fine (they aren't heavy).

My apprentice came by and saw my crazy test before she finished welding up her first bamboo stick using some of my fancy scraps- one of the fanciest beginner bamboo sticks I have ever seen. I walked her through bombarding it too (its rare I get to teach that). Apprentice Claire is learning to bend the rules like the best of them :)

Managed to snag a slightly more modern #CarMaintenance #book from 2010 (only £7 second hand, cost about £30 new!) written as a textbook for #apprentice #mechanics (who would mostly be in late teens at further education #college), but a good read for me to get my head round how more modern #cars work and how such things as fuel injection, sensors and ECU interact (my older books, though detailed concentrate on things like carburettors and distributors which are not used in todays vehicles)
