Your Li Bai songs are a gift, thank you David. I have listened to Song I just now. Such a deep, intimate experience.

Three minutes of emotional and aesthetic intensity. I will let the after-effects do their work, then I will listen to Song I again. After a while I will listen to Song II. I will give these songs time.

Your follow-up thread is very moving too: the collaboration with your wife and father-in-law, the respect for the meaning and sound of the original poetry.

I don't speak any Chinese, but to my ears the affinity between music and text is so complete it hits me. I am moved by a text that speaks to me even if I have never understood its literal meaning.

As a young man I once attended a summer festival dedicated to Anton Webern (Berliner Festwochen 1983). Three weeks of emotional and aesthetic purity. I remember the elation coming from this encounter. I experience the same elation now.

Talking of Webern, here is a striking photograph of Arnold Shoenberg, Anton Webern and Erwin Stein, at a Dutch beach (Zandvoort) in March 1914. Taken by Alban Berg. Schoenberg Archive PH2225.

We note the date: just before the old order tumbled.

The composition feels like a 1920s Walker Evans, and are these perhaps three Jazz dudes on a 1970s record cover?

  4. @connect_icut @vinylrecords Got me wondering what my #lastfm recently ranked artists would be, had I used it: Maybe #R.A.P.Ferreira? #AntonWebern perhaps? Probably #TheClash, they are always at the ready round these parts.

But anyway - surprised to see #TheYoungGods on your list! They were on my radar in the 80s, initially because The Swans Young God EP left such a deep cleft in my brain. But I did like their early records a lot. Didn't realise they've released like a dozen more albums since.
