"According to Statistics Canada’s latest projections, in 2050 (a brief 24 years from now), Quebecers will count for less than 20 per cent of Canada’s population (between 18.1 per cent and 19.1 per cent, to be precise). Alberta’s population will be inexorably catching up, with between 13.5 per cent and 16.1 per cent of the total population in 2050."

"“Do people at the coffee machine this morning discuss Carney and Lord Durham, or are they rather talking about the cost of living, the problems with health care and the poor state of our roads?” Still, this will do little to reassure those who are now realizing that a prime minister who owes his government in large part to Quebec voters appears not to grasp the bloody and painful beginnings of the Canadian story."

#AndréPratte writes about #Québec separatists trying to play down the dangers of Pres. Trump to Québec, despite the deep concerns Quebeckers have about him, e.g., “Are we capable of understanding that our membership in Canada is far more dangerous for our people than a cordial relationship with the United States?”
Mr. Pratte wonders if Pres. Trump will support the separatists to weaken Canada.

"In 2022, buoyed largely by his pandemic performance, Legault was re-elected with a strong majority. At the time, even his political opponents considered him virtually unbeatable as long as he remained in office. Then, something changed. It is difficult to say exactly why, but suddenly every project launched by his government and every crisis it sought to manage seemed to go wrong. By the fall of 2023, the CAQ’s once-robust poll numbers began to collapse."

#AndréPratte: How Pablo Rodriguez lost control of the Quebec Liberals
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/andre-pratte-how-pablo-rodriguez-lost-control-of-the-quebec-liberals"Four investigations are now underway: in addition to the retired judge hired by the Quebec Liberal Party, the National Assembly’s ethics commissioner, Elections Quebec, and, we have now learned, Quebec’s anti-corruption police unit are looking into the matter. Meanwhile, investigative reporters are digging deeper, uncovering new details almost daily."

Separatist fantasies about Quebec's global influence get a free pass
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/andre-pratte-separatist-fantasies-about-quebecs-global-influence-gets-a-free-pass#AndréPratte claims that an independent #Québec would have less influence on world affairs than Canada does presently, which is obviously true; and he claims that it would be easier for stronger powers to bully an independent Québec, also true.
I'm not even sure Canada has a meaningful degree of global influence at present. What do our embassies do that's useful?
