Andalusite thin section in cross-polarized light. Faint chiastolitic (is that an adjective?) inclusion trails link the corners of the crystal. From an unknown locality, in our teaching collection.

@roytoo Here I am unsure because I sure like the properties and uses of #Monazite but I’m unfamiliar with it. Now #Andalusite is more well known and I’m always drawn to Pleochroism with my artist eyes. And this does work in faceting.

It's a color-changing match of informative minerals! Time-tracker #Monazite-(Ce)'s yellow in sunlight takes on an orangey hue in incandescent light, while index mineral #Andalusite is pleochroic, changing colours when rotated under polarized light.

What happens if you add heat to sedimentary rocks? You get fun minerals such as andalusite seen here as the white prismatic, nearly square and diamond crystals in metamorphosed slate. The source of the high temperatures was a granite intrusion that created a contact aureole.
