  3. Pesticide exposure at work may increase motor neurone disease risk – new study

"A new study, published today, has found that being exposed to pesticide at work can increase the risk of developing ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) by 61–71%. The study brings together the findings of eight other studies – but not all of them assess risk in the same way. Here’s why we need to interpret the findings with caution....Overall, the study supports the case that being exposed to pesticide at work increases your risk of developing ALS." >>

  5. 🦟 Canadian scientists pooled and re-analysed the data from 11 previous studies on links between pesticide exposure (including herbicides and insecticides) and motor neuron disease, finding that exposure was linked to a 60-70% increase in the risk of men developing the most common form, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The team says that, compared with no exposure, exposure to herbicides was linked to a 70% increase in a man's risk of developing the disease, and exposure to either insecticides or fungicides was linked with a 60% increase in risk. Interestingly, the researchers point out that there was no increased risk seen in women. It's important to note, the authors say, that this kind of study is limited by the quality of the original studies it is based on, and does not prove the pesticides caused the disease, just that the two may be linked.

Australian scientists from The University of Queensland, RMIT University, University of Sydney and Adelaide University have offered commentary on the research.

TITLE: Scientists may have found aging’s hidden trigger for brain disease

    URL: sciencedaily.com/releases/2026

Scientists have identified a molecular switch that may help explain why aging makes the brain more vulnerable to diseases such as ALS and Huntington’s. In worms, the protein EPS8 builds up with age and triggers signaling that encourages toxic proteins to clump together, damaging neurons and shortening lifespan. Reducing EPS8 activity prevented these harmful aggregates and preserved nerve function.

  9. A longitudinal study of almost 10 million veterans of U.S. military branches found significant differences in the prevalence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease) between service branches, ranks, and length of service. Rates were highest in the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard; among officers; and among younger service members.

Cafe staffed by robots piloted by people with #disabilities to open in #Tokyo

    By Toby M, Mar. 5, 2021

"#OriHime is a charming Japanese robot. Like most robots made in Japan, it’s full of circuitry, programming chips, and has an exterior human-like shell. Though in OriHime’s case, it’s more #WallE than terminator thanks to the soft edges and large babyish eyes.

"The interior of OriHime is also intrinsically human in many ways that its robot brethren are not. OriHime’s purpose is to be a vessel that empowers people who have difficulty going outside or moving due to severe disabilities or illnesses such as #ALS to connect with everyday society and people within. Practically speaking, the robot can support people who are bed bound to connect with distant family, or work a job for example.

"Since 2018, people with disabilities have taken up opportunities to work as cafe staff through OriHime in the pop-up cafe 'Avatar Cafe DAWN ver.β'. Avatar Cafe DAWN seeks to eliminate human loneliness by enabling people who are bed or house bound to enjoy working as cafe staff and communicating with customers."

  31. Today is Lou Gehrig day, when Major League Baseball teams recognize the New York Yankees legend who died from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at age 37, 85 years ago today. Yahoo Sports' Jake Mintz talked to Sarah Langs, baseball's preeminent researcher (she is the research and content manager for MLB.com), who watches every game, providing a constant stream of insights and stats for writers and reporters, all while living with ALS herself. "The support I’ve received from across the sport is truly beyond words. I often say baseball is the best because its people are the best, and I’ve been overwhelmed by the support — in a good way.

“And that spirit of support predates ALS, for the record.”
