View from a Fish Tank (Part 1)

I watched the angelfish swim by. Watched might be the wrong word. “The angel swam by” would be more accurate. My eyes were actually on the dead fish floating at the top of the #tank. It was pretty careless of the hospital to allow visitors to see that. If I believed in omens, it would freak me out.
A can of black coffee had grown cold in my hands. I hate coffee unless it has lots of sugar and milk. But it had been too much work to think about what to buy, so I had randomly punched a button. All I could think about was Adachi’s haggard face and her slightly askewed wig when she went in for her appointment.
I glanced at the door the nurse had wheeled her through. I didn’t believe in omens, did I?
Before my wife left, I said, “Just let them admit you. They’ll make you comfortable, and I’ll be there as much as I can.” It had gotten to that point.
She just shook her head.
I wasn’t sure why I’d bothered. She wanted to die at home. One less second with me was intolerable to her. I kind of understood; I no longer had any conception of what life without her meant. I would soon.
“Pretty,” a voice next to me said. I turned and found a girl wearing an angel onesie, Yashiro. Her blue hair sparkled as always. The fish nosed the tank’s glass. They must have thought the bright flecks floating in the air were food.
For a second, I wanted to slap her. How dare she look so young and bright when Adachi and I had faded? Time wore all things away except Yashiro.
“Fish!” she said, dropping my hand. On the way to look at the bright swimmers more closely, she scooped up my untouched vending machine pastry. She would certainly enjoy it more than I would, and hopefully, it would prevent her from trying to eat the contents of the aquarium. You can never tell with Yashiro.
A big smile spread across her face as she took a bite. “Destiny!”
“You want to know a secret?” she said, dabbing a sugary crumb off her cheek before popping it into her mouth. “I always pay for what I get,” she continued, waving the pastry, now with a large bite out of it.
It was a lie. I think she paid for what she got in stores. Not that I was sure. But she never paid for the snacks she caged off me.
“Sure,” I said. “Tell me a secret.”
