In one job I was responsible for adding acronyms to a large organisation's glossary. There were thousands, and I knew there were still thousands used that we had not captured. It made me really think about how and why we use acronyms. They are helpful at times, but excessive use causes problems.
Here are a couple of guidelines about acronyms that I wish people would consider:
1. Don't obfuscate meaning by using an acronym. It is a Reconciliation Action Plan, not a RAP. It is domestic violence, not DV. Say it in full if you mean it.
2. Acronyms are an exclusive language used by an 'in' crowd. Newcomers try to fit in by pretending to know the acronym then quietly look it up when no-one is looking. If you want a newcomer to feel welcome in an organisation and reduce their anxiety, always define acronyms when they are first used in a document or in speech.

I am loving the intro. After talking about the manipulation of language by totalitarian states and how the subdued masses adopt that language, Watson says:
"The same mimicry can be expected wherever the official language is a kind of code that we must at least appear to understand, or be excluded. It happens in democracies, and in business and government departments."
How often have you found when starting a new job that you ate desperately trying to use the acronyms, the phrases and names that are bandied around the office to show that you fit in, that you are a 'valuable team member'?

Learn that it’s a “text-based chat system for instant messaging… designed for group communication in discussion forums [channels] but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer including file sharing.

On the latest #ATPpodcast I heard @siracusa pronounce the HEIC image format as a word - "heek" [hiːk]. He is the first human I have heard pronounce it as a word. I feel like, for me, it will always be "H E I C".
There are several acronyms I treat this way, that I've heard others say as words, thinking about it.
PNG, SVG, BMP, IFF, SQL, URL, LED, GUI, PDF, PCMCIA (well...), etc.
I am old and set in my ways.
By the way, GIF is not on that list because I pronounce it as a word starting with a soft G, because that is how that is pronounced.
