  4. IoT privacy compliance development.
Samsung will revise ACR data practices after legal action by the Texas Attorney General.

    Key elements:
    • Real-time viewing habit collection under scrutiny
    • Enhanced disclosure & consent flow promised
    • Emphasis on consumer transparency
    • Broader regulatory pressure on smart device telemetry

ACR data monetization highlights a persistent tension:
    Device intelligence vs user autonomy
    Advertising revenue vs explicit consent
    Convenience vs continuous telemetry
As regulatory enforcement increases, IoT vendors may face stricter consent design expectations.
Question for security & privacy professionals:
Should connected consumer devices require periodic re-consent for telemetry collection?

  8. @m ...And having read your post, yes, it's a pretty important post, and definitely worth making readable! (I wasn't following your blog... but I am now.)

Just to press another possible button, I need to buy a new TV, and am horrified to discover that automated content recognition #ACR is now apparently universal! And allegedly some TVs have cameras in them to assess the sentiment of the viewers.

    captaincompliance.com/educatio

  9. I'm trying to buy a replacement #TV; our 10 year old Samsung is developing dreaded white spots. But I discover that ALL the TVs you can buy these days are watching you through #ACR (automatic content recognition) multiple times a seond, checking what you watch against huge databases.

Usual dark patterns: 1 click to say yes, 40 clicks in multiple menus to say no... and then all your TV channel apps won't work. Texas suing: youtube.com/watch?v=dehzLA4kFqM

Apple TV only one not using ACR?

  11. Texas judge issues restraining order against Samsung smart TVs for unauthorized Automated Conted Recognition

This feature takes screenshots of your TV every 0.5s and collects data of everything you watch (including entering passwords in apps etc.) without consent. It's a part of a larger lawsuits against Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense and TCL.

  14. The music charts in the UK have some stupid quirks designed to stop tracks that the big streaming services have in their curated playlists clogging up the charts

Taylor Swift "The Fate of Ophelia" has gone 1-1-1-2-2-1-1-1-1-17-24-40

RAYE "Where the Hell is my husband" has gone 4-3-6-5-4-3-3-3-3-2-2-2-27-48

Can you see where ACR kicked in? As if that wasn't stupid enough AIUI they'll both get a reset this week so both tracks have a good chance of being #1 and #2 again on Friday :eyeroll:

  18. "Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued five large TV manufacturers yesterday, alleging that their smart TVs spy on viewers without consent. Paxton sued Samsung, the longtime TV market share leader, along with LG, Sony, Hisense, and TCL.

“These companies have been unlawfully collecting personal data through Automated Content Recognition (‘ACR’) technology,” Paxton’s office alleged in a press release that contains links to all five lawsuits. “ACR in its simplest terms is an uninvited, invisible digital invader. This software can capture screenshots of a user’s television display every 500 milliseconds, monitor viewing activity in real time, and transmit that information back to the company without the user’s knowledge or consent. The companies then sell that consumer information to target ads across platforms for a profit. This technology puts users’ privacy and sensitive information, such as passwords, bank information, and other personal information at risk.”

The lawsuits allege violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, seeking damages of up to $10,000 for each violation and up to $250,000 for each violation affecting people 65 years or older. Texas also wants restraining orders prohibiting the collection, sharing, and selling of ACR data while the lawsuits are pending."

  20. today’s “tales from the #enshitocene”… 😩

    we’re at a rental property for our honeymoon! 🎉🎉🎉 👰‍♀️👰‍♀️🐶 🚣‍♀️🐶🚣‍♀️ (that’s not the #enshittified part 🤪)

the house has a “smart” (🙄) TV – so far I’ve removed 3 previous still-logged-in Google account profiles, disabled analytics & “data sharing” in three different places, turned off all the Google / Alexa integration bullshit (especially the microphone wake word!), etc., etc. 😩

but at least one profile is still “remembered” somewhere in the settings, since if you open the “set up Google assistant” page (to make sure everything’s turned off), it “helpfully” pre-fills the account box with the email of one of the (obviously-not-really-)deleted accounts

(I’ll probably email that person & let them know that I’ve logged out of their account for them & suggest that maybe they should do that themselves next time they log in to their account on some rando’s TV… 🤪)

and of course, despite us def never logging in to any apps on some rando’s TV & only running stuff on our own laptops connected via HDMI, we still run the risk of the TV snitching on us via totally undisclosed & un-opt-outable #AutomatedContentRecognition (#ACR) tech – this particular TV is a #TCL one, one of the brands named in a new #lawsuit in… ✷checks notes✷ …#Texas (😳 but also 🎉)

  21. #Texas sues #TV makers for taking screenshots of what people watch
The lawsuits target #Sony, #Samsung, #LG, and #China-based companies #Hisense and #TCL. According to complaints filed in Texas state courts, the TV makers can allegedly use #ACR technology to capture screenshots of television displays every 500 milliseconds, monitor the users' viewing activity in real time, and send this information back to the companies' servers without the users' knowledge or consent.

  22. 📺 Your Smart TV is watching you. 👀

Hidden inside most modern TVs is something called ACR, Automatic Content Recognition. It tracks everything you watch and sends it to third parties for ad targeting and profit. It's turned on by default, and most people never even know.
