  1. help they could get. Good mic placement makes sure that folks online as well as folks in the room who are hard-of-hearing or are used to another accent can get the best audio possible to work with.

    - Don't treat those attending online as some lesser form of attendee - if you throw it open to Q & A, make sure you're making it possible for those online also to submit questions.

  2. PhD Fellowship in Urban Morphology, Accessibility and Mobility Cultures

A PhD where I really think someone with disabilities that affect their mobility should apply. Unfortunately, bullshit like "ability to...handle a heavy workload" means it'll probably be abled urbanists doing things disabled people should be doing.

  3. Recently, #TREE published a TrendsTalk piece 📜 on disability in ecology and evolution to which our PI @DenisMeuthen contributed with his personal career experiences and viewpoints. The article is available here: cell.com/trends/ecology-evolut

  4. I’m getting increasingly irate about my university’s subtle, quiet move to removing online & hybrid access for staff. Talks/training were almost always hybrid when I started. A few months on, more and more is ‘in person only.’ Universities, you have disabled staff working remotely for multiple access reasons. Our access matters. #AcademicAbleism

  5. I'm at a fantastic webinar on the Politics and Practices of University Exclusion, sharing findings from #SocialResearch with/led by marginalised researchers in universities - beginning with a research project on LGBT+ staff on the rainbow lanyard & experiences of support/exclusion in universities. Talks coming up from racially minoritised & disabled researchers on their work/networks. One theme coming through is the extra labour of #MarginalisedResearchers that #Academia relies on from them but doesn't compensate. Another is a lack of accountability e.g. when trying to navigate anonymous systems. Loved one participant's call for solidarity between academics from many oppressed groups. #AcademicRacism #AcademicTransphobia #AcademicAbleism

  6. @elduvelle Ableism is what slants it. Right now people comparing in-person and online conference options are comparing apples and road apples.

Ableism ensures that all of society makes as little investment as possible into accessible options (as you can see by how we're not learning lessons from the pandemic, rolling back most online options & training & development of online pedagogy/event planning). #Conferences #Ableism #Pedagogy #AcademicAbleism

  7. I brought a couple of complaints to my HR recently & damn, I'm happy. They confirmed what I thought (yes, this looks an awful lot like disability discrimination) & are investigating. Fingers crossed folks. HR is not always the friend of disabled folks in #HigherEd so I had to share the news.

Also, to all of my disabled friends in academia, document the heck out of everything.

  8. yay another episode of #AcademicAbleism !!

So we had our retake times and dates back, and my retake for Clinical Biomedicine is going to be at 9am on the 16th. This is in spite of the fact that I have an adaption that stipulates that all my exams must be taken in the afternoon.

Its pointless complaining, as I know what they'll say: "No disability adaptions are guaranteed".

#Academia needs change and those within it need to be held accountable for #Accessibility .

  9. It's 2024 and we're still doing laptop bans in classrooms, huh?

For the millionth time, technology bans are incredibly ableist. There's no discussion to be had.

Requiring disabled students to out themselves as disabled in order to use their technology in class makes you a poor educator.

  10. Your regular reminder to document everything, especially everything from those holding any sort of power over you. One of them will inevitably discriminate against you for being disabled, dig their heels in, and you will need to go to HR.

If you've got it all documented, it's easier.

  11. Apparently the expectation that PostDoc applicants have been a Co-PI on major grants is now popping up. Have you advertised for a PostDoc position that required Co-PI on major funding? Congratulations on contributing to toxic work expectations, shutting out minorities, and showing that you're an asshole.

  12. As the semester has ended for most folks, I want to remind all disabled students about the US Office of Civil Rights. If you were discriminated against for your disability or denied an accommodation, you have 90 days since the incident to file a complaint.

  13. The amount of time I have spent teaching others about disability, accommodations, HIPAA, ableism compared to the amount of time I have spent doing my actual job is ridiculous. It's a form of #AcademicAbleism. I spend more time advocating for student rights and the rights of neurodivergent people in #STEM and #HigherEd. Not because I want my advocacy to be such a large part of my identity. I actually would prefer to do more science & research, publish more, submit more grant proposals. (1/n)

  14. Timely reminder that disabilities are fluid. A person may be symptomatic one day and fine the next. A student may not need accommodations during the semester, but the end of the term rush may make accommodations very necessary. This does NOT mean the student is faking it or taking advantage of you.

  15. Check out this recent poster, "ADHD Assessment and Treatment Policies among a National Sample of US Colleges and Universities". Two main points I'm taking away from this review of 200 institutions: <20% offer clinical #ADHD diagnoses and 25-50% do not allow their docs to prescribe stimulants.

  17. Any other neurodivergent folks get every question wrong in the university's cyber security training or is that just me? I can almost always think of an exception to an answer and am currently failing mine.

  18. Another day, another Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion invite for an event that is in-person only. Glad to see the consistency in the ableism...

  19. @cavyherd Any chance you are registered with the disability office or it's a quick process to do so? This is such blatant #AcademicAbleism that it should get shut down pretty damn quickly.

  20. Having zero folks on your staff roster with a background in disability studies is a red flag for a university disability services/ accessibility services. Just my two cents.

  21. I love the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), but I am a bit surprised that agendas for meetings or clear objectives for meetings isn't an accommodation (for any disability but esp. executive functioning and memory)?

Yes, it's best practice, I know. I need something that proves to HR why I need this. Why meetings with no structure and 100% flexibility impair my memory, ability to organize my mind, plan, & etc

  22. A blog post on paying disabled people and valuing our work, and how academic #ableism gets in the way of that. These are thoughts that have come out of some writing I've been doing on inclusive disability research. naomilawsonjacobs.com/at-the-g #AcademicAbleism #InclusiveResearch

  23. Within a department, multiple DEI committees being formed (and dismantled or going dormant), should be a red flag. Someone high up keeps dismantling these groups (or otherwise working against them) or there isn't enough support among faculty to make any progress.

A DEI group struggling to make changes, that's something.

Multiple DEI groups that give up, there's a reason. And it’s persistent. And it's bad.

  24. Plenty of people in higher education care about justice and equity but far fewer can answer the question, "What actions have you recently taken fighting for justice in your department/field?" There are loads of kind folks who care about racism, ableism, sexism. We need more who care enough to fight.

  25. This is so true. I've recently listened to a bunch of Michel Foucault's books through the public library via Libby (while scrolling social media). I'd read the key parts of them before, but listening from start to finish is another experience! Availability of academic books in accessible formats is the main problem here. My research participants called for more academic texts (theology, in their case) to be available in audiobook, Braille etc. I'd like academics to value alt formats more and encourage their publishers to produce audiobook versions.

  26. The first week or so of classes can be pretty stressful. New schedules and routines are hard when you have #ADHD. Schedule in time for rest and restoration!

Drop ableist classes. Read the syllabus and look for ableist policies like attendance absolutely required or no flexibility on turning in late work. Talk to others in the class and ask if they've taken courses with the instructor before. Say no to #AcademicAbleism when you can.

  27. Before expressing your disdain for ADHD students who "need to learn to manage their conditions" and learn that deadlines exist, check yourself. How many of the deadlines you encounter are truly hard deadlines?

Also, unless you're helping them "learn to manage their condition," shut up.

  28. For those who don't know, you can file an official complaint with the U.S. Office of Civil Rights if your university discriminates against you, and this includes disability discrimination. Will anything change? Honestly, probably not. Will the process take a long time? Most likely. Will there at least be some sort of record? Yes. This last part is why I even suggest the idea.

  29. To disclose or not to disclose? Someone reached out to me recently to ask if they should disclose their ADHD when applying to graduate school. My advice is not to say #ADHD but to use neurodevelopmental disability or disability. Stigmas run deep and are hard to detect. #HigherEd in general isn't a friendly place for disabled and/or neurodivergent folks.

  30. @DisabledInSTEM has an anonymous review process for institutions. If you are #disabled and sought accommodations at your institution, consider sharing your experience.

Information on disability accommodations, #accessibility, and #AcademicAbleism can help future students and scholars make informed decisions. Please spread the word!

  31. If you consider yourself an ally of disabled students, faculty, and staff, ask yourself how many barriers you've challenged in your workplace, department, office, lab. Disclosing #disability in and of itself is often a challenge for disabled folks. Every time we have to explain our disability in relation to an inaccessible form or discriminatory policy, that's work. You can identify and challenge those barriers too.

  33. Attendance policies were always ableist. They were ableist during the pandemic, and they're ableist now.

If students don't attend your class, ask yourself why. Why aren't they interested? Why isn't my class valuable? What barriers are preventing them from attending? How do I adapt to meet students where they're at? How can I create multiple spaces for participation and engagement?
