I come from a country where #piracy was definitely bigger than sales when it comes to music and movies from the west, but that's due to the low economic standards of the population, and the years of sanctions in the #90s.
Nowadays with the streaming platforms, I'm not so sure.

Anyway - we should demand #transparency from them.

There's a lot of truth in what you're saying. I think it's an attempt to borrow the prestige of #science. For many (not all) of these disciplines, "#SocialResearch" would be a more appropriate term.
