  1. AETHER – Golden Journey by Marigpa – at Dundas Street Gallery

Following a transformative multi-month retreat into total silence, London-based artist Marigpa returns to the international stage with “AETHER…

  2. 3/ this art critic & I would not see eye to eye on a lot. I was mad for a while. I suppose I still am. I probably stopped following him (but it’s almost always a good idea, no matter who it is, to stop following an account of someone you don’t know). I only make #AbstractExpressionist art and it’s my primary interest in art and probably always will be. The fact that the possibly most known current art critic thinks the point of abex was being part of a movement is proof the work is still needed.

  7. Writing positive science fiction lurks among my many creative dreams. Unsure whether I’d rather envision a fantasy community with kinder structures than ours from scratch; or chronicle a transition from enshittified to cooperative.

Solution? Write multiple permutations. Get on it, Rob!

    I continue to use
#calckey less than other social media, but I am committed to being here. I use #Mastodon, #Instagram, and #Facebook more. The Meta platforms I use begrudgingly because of connections there who don't seem to have the available brainspace [a.k.a. spoons] to learn new things. Connecting with others is an essential part of my mission as an #artist. I feel that that requires continuing to post content regularly to the large numbers of people whom #Meta currently holds captive. (I'm financially dependent on charity, patrons, and debt at the moment, so I cannot afford to walk away from the platforms where I know the most people.) I can see the positive influence of the #fediverse carrying over even in my actions on those other platforms. With the Fediverse providing outlet and inflow of positive feelings and information, the coercive social media platforms shrink in importance. I am able to dip in and out without as much investment. I always knew it was essential not to care who sees what, not obsessing over algorithms, likes, views. I could feel in my bones how unhealthy it was but joining the Fediverse is what finally freed me. More freedom, more joy, and also being partially checked out on Meta, I mostly share only positive things like this video from my Mastodon account that I also shared on Instagram. [EDIT: Untrue. The video I shared on Instagram is too large to share on the Fediverse & that's another difference worth noting. I get it, the difference between posting on an evil billionaire's servers vs. here. I tried multiple times to edit the video down but my results were either poor resolution or so short that I no longer liked it. I will continue to put thought into how best to share my kind of content on the fedi. To see the ASMRish video on Insta: https://www.instagram.com/p/CqqCgUdAdZi/ ] — I'll share a still pic of my art instead, but guess what? I also hate describing my abstract paintings in words! I swear though I do love the Fediverse! 😛

I welcome suggestions from others on how to improve my user experience here.

(My difficulties using Calckey are when I want to check out a profile elsewhere, or when I see something while using my Mastodon account that I want to "bring over" to this profile. So far I usually give up before succeeding in doing it. I could jump start this profile by simply following everyone I am already following on Mastodon, but I want this experience to differ, and to grow organically. For now that will mean slow growth. And I'm ok with that. Slow going means more time for thinking.)

  16. “Neurodivergent” — what does it mean to you? Is it so all encompassing as to be meaningless? That’s the nature of umbrella terms. I believe it’s most accurate to view human traits on spectrums not either/or. “Sensitive” folks are imo the canaries in the coal mine of human civilization. If you’re not noticing something, if you’re proudly multitasking your way to success, you might also be having trouble sleeping. Or suffering digestive difficulties. Or developing other stress related Issues that are as yet unseen. Someone like me, I start talking about the aggravations of my environment as soon as I sense them.

I made three posts today on Facebook trying to lure friends away! This post is one, only slightly rewritten.

I’m reminded that I’ve always felt sensitive to advertising, while others are adept at tuning it out. I remember when ads first exploded on sports broadcasts (yes it was once a much calmer viewing experience) & when perpetual motion began to accompany all newscasts. I found it all disorienting. I grew up with my face to the media firehose—I consider mass media as much an influence on who I am as anything else—and I began my retreat away from it very early. It hurts me. It’s painful, psychologically, psychically, & physically. I’m allergic to insincerity. Now, I happen to think the same things I’m hyper attenuated to are corrosive to society. I think the callous that we each build up to protect us from harmful mass communication is what prevents us from cohering as one people...

I get raw, bad anxiety feelings in certain online venues. I can understand that others don’t or may consider it the “cost of doing online business.” The primary reason I want to move all of you to my preferred networks is that it vaguely ~feels better~ there! I’m currently reliving my HUMANISM show. In the artist statement (see attached post) I make the “radical” connection between my art & humanism. How is what I do a political act? Most statement art is very direct in its messaging, a fact I feel ambivalence over. Much of it I like, it feels good to see positive values reinforced and to fight oppressors unambiguously. In such an environment my art has no place. (Literally. I’ve never been asked to be part of any statement-themed show, despite being a screaming gay, left liberal!) The radical act of
#abstractexpressionist #art is that it doesn’t tell you what to think. That’s it! In my view it’s necessary to start that basic. ”The way things are” feels already set in motion & unstoppable. To change we must first see change as possible. Doing that requires respect for human thought & human difference. That’s what I try to teach with my art. I feel we have not even established the basic principle that all humans are worthy of respect, with our differences intact. Without that foundation I do not believe collective progress is possible. And I think that’s why the world is as it is.
