#a11ytoconf — Public Fediverse posts

Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #a11ytoconf, aggregated by home.social.

  1. Save the date! #a11yTOConf returns to the Barbara Frum Atrium at CBC on Oct 22–23, 2026. Two days of learning + connection with accessibility pros worldwide, with a renewed focus on technical talks and actionable takeaways. More soon!

  2. @eric Eric's talk was peppered with great quotations and references to influences.

I've experienced burnout and one of the quotes that particularly struck home with me was from Dr. Amelia Nagoski, co-author of Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle:

"This is a larger systemic issue that has to be addressed, which is why the cure for burnout is not self care — can never be self care. The cure for burnout has to be all of us caring for each other."

    #a11yTOConf #burnout

  3. Eric Bailey @eric closed out the day with a powerful talk that combined personal narrative, systemic warnings, and thoughtful analysis with expressions of community care and hope.

An interesting companion piece to Hitomi Yokata's talk this morning. Drawing on the discourse of harm reduction, he adapted the principles to trauma-informed design.

Going to be thinking about this one for a long time.

  4. In his talk, "Tiny CSS, Big Impact," Mike Mai @mikemai2awesome showcased minimal CSS code snippets that leverage native browser behaviours and default base styles to make big impacts on accessibility.

    Very cool.

I am once again reminded that my CSS skills have not kept up with the state of browser defaults and latest CSS properties! Looking forward to incorporating a few of these snippets in my own code.

  5. Adrian Roselli @aardrian was "Talkin' Tables" at #a11yTOConf today. From simple to complex tables, sticky headers , and sortable columns, he (tried!) to cover it all!

His site has links to tons of detailed table code snippets and recommendations:

  6. Very cool demo by Quintin Balsdon demonstrating "Ally Keys: A hardware tool for Mobile Keyboard Accessibility"

By plugging in a dongle, and a bit of configuration, you can use the ally-keys website to help you enter keyboard, gesture, and switch commands to a connected iPhone or wherever.

It's like having an external hardware mobile keyboard, "but here's the twist: It has no keys!"

  7. During her talk, "Trauma-Informed Design Research: Creating Safety in User Engagements on Sensitive Topics" on Day 2 of the #a11yTOConf , Hitomi Yokota quoted from Resmaa Menakem:

"Trauma decontextualized in a person looks like personality.

Trauma decontextualized in a family system looks like a family trait.

Trauma decontextualized in a people looks like a culture."

  8. It was both fun and enlightening to watch Homer Gaines @homer do a live code demo fixing up a chat bot to close out Day 1 of #a11yTOConf 2025.

The Anatomy of an Accessible Chat Interface

This conference always finds an interesting balance between technical, practical, and theoretical.

  9. Morgan Kestner walked through "How to build an A11y support system that works" by providing a clear series of examples from her experience at Indeed. I liked how she separated various components and workflows into discrete actionable or digestible chunks.

She's sharing her Accessibility Program Resources on GitHub. 👍

  10. @shepazu made an interesting distinction, calling ParaCharts an "underlay", setting it in opposition to an "overlay".

Where an overlay "tries to make structured data from flawed UI", an underlay by contrast "provides accessible UI from structured data".

Very impressed not only by the potential of this software, but also by the care and attention to privacy and ethics in its implementation of LLMs.

  11. Super interesting presentation by Doug Schepers @shepazu on Inclusive Data Visualization with AI Descriptions.

Explained many of the myriad challenges to making charts accessible. And then walked through a fascinating demo of ParaCharts [1].

Looking forward to exploring Chartability [2] another resource from their team.

  13. Michelle A. Williams explains the "Reality: Recruiting is Involved."

    Slide contents:

    • Disabled participants are not a monolith
    - Participants should have related user characteristics

    • There is no "Disability Lane"
    - Finding participants is not easy

    • Relationship building has lopsided payoff
    - Want to avoid "career participants"

... I've definitely been guilty of underestimating recruitment tasks!

  15. Looking forward to Day 1 of A11yTO Conference 2025 starting in half an hour.

Several speakers are new to me, and I always find the sessions at this single-track two-day conference in my home town of Toronto to be carefully curated and enlightening.

    Bring it on!

  22. Updated my post “What Does X% of Issues Mean?” with notes from @SteveFaulkner’s #a11yTOConf talk:
    adrianroselli.com/2022/07/what

He noted that the removal of 4.1.1 likely reduces claims back to the ~30% we expect from auto-test results against WCAG.
