Behold! the #Weltron2001 stereo radio/8-track player, ca. 1970. AKA "The Space Ball".
"A stellar example of 1970s 'space-abilia,' this Weltron model 2001 radio/tape player has a unique, unmistakable profile. It's the size and shape of a bowling ball, with a spaceman-like face and a carrying handle on top.
Adding to the space-guy look are the twin speakers, whose grille holes give the appearance of ears or headphones. At the back of each grille is a jack for an extension speaker. A stereo headphone jack is placed under the "chin" at bottom front.
At the bottom of the swivelling base is a giant rubber suction cup, making the radio extremely stable on a smooth surface."

"Folks that took the time to record their own 8-tracks usually printed the tracklisting neatly on the front of the cart. Oftentimes, the person added some artwork in the margins, folk art of the times."

Despite their releasing six albums in the early 70s, I suspect you aren't familiar with the #FamleyGuitarBand. This is partly because their albums only ever saw release on #Quadraphonic #8Track - as well as on the even more obscure 7 ½ ips #ReelToReel format. Famley Guitar Band were a studio-only group that gave us loungy, guitar led instrumental versions of the hits of their day, and were surprisingly good at it - their winsome version of #DannyOKeefe's "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues" gets me every time.
Quad 8-tracks are a trip: since the format required twice the tape to create the surround-sound effect, it cut the available play time on a tape in half. You'd only be able to hear the full effect on special quad players, as playback on normal 8-track players resulted in hearing just half (i.e. 2 channels) of the music.

Decades ago, a wise old man once whispered the hallowed name #Wollensak to me over righteous weed & the dulcet strains of vintage #ThirteethFloorElevators vinyl. "It's the one we're all looking for," he pronounced, flashing a conspiratorial smile. Wollensak. I never forgot this.
To quote one enthusiast over at AudioKarma forums: "the Wollensak 8075 is, arguably, the best 8 track player/recorder ever made. It eclipses most other 8 track players in about every way. 30hz-15Khz with the special tape formulation, 30-12Khz with regular tape. 0.1 Wow and flutter spec, better than 50 DB SNR with Dolby off, can achieve better than 60Db with Dolby on."
Now, I don't know what any of these specs actually mean. But I am familiar with the shit-can fidelity that hobbles most 8-track stereos built in the 1970s. So let the search begin! The Wollensak 8075 is now my new holy grail.

This home taped #OtisRedding & #JimiHendrixExperience #8TrackCartridge eBay-find initially had me stumped. Where oh where had I seen those long legs on the original tape label peeking out from underneath at the bottom? Then I flashed on it: it's the Fool On The Hill album by #SergioMendesAndBrasil66, that easy-listening warhorse of conservative household music collections all across the US in the early 70s.
Finally, Sergio M. is going to good use.
(Also note: this taper went and split both "Satisfaction" and "Like a Rolling Stone" across programs - proof he/she was a truly sensible 8-track listener)
